Donald Dunagan Obituary

Augusta, GA – Dr. Donald Dunagan entered into rest February 11, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving wife and family.

Don is the son of Paul and Lona Dunagan of Clermont, Georgia. He grew up on the family farm with his five siblings. He contracted polio as a child and spent some of his early years receiving care at the Scottish Rite Hospital. Knowing that his affected leg would limit his farming abilities, Don directed his efforts and his love of reading and learning towards pursuing a path of medicine. After graduating from North Georgia Military College in Dahlonega on a scholarship, he headed to Augusta to the Medical College of Georgia. There, as part of the Country Doc Scholarship Program, he obtained his medical doctorship and completed a residency in pediatrics. He loved teaching medical students and was honored to receive the Golden Apple Award for Teaching. It was in Augusta and while studying medicine that Donald met the love of his life, a young nursing student, Alice Jeanette Collins, whom he married and celebrated 65 years of life with.

After his medical training, Don chose to work at Gracewood State School and Hospital. With forty years of faithful service behind him, he retired as clinical director. He served the community through his involvement in the South Augusta Exchange Club. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Augusta where he was an active member of the Ballentine Sunday School Class and sang regularly in the church choir.

After retirement, Don and Jeanette spent much of their time at their second home at the lake. Donald's other hobbies included reading and clock building as well as working on both of his homes and real estate property that he acquired as a young adult. Anyone whoever met Don always commented on his kind and gentle disposition, oftentimes stating that he was "the sweetest man they had ever met".

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers David, Carlton, and Raymond Dunagan, his sister Pauline Connor, son-in-law Frank Londino and granddaughter, Sarah Londino. He is survived by his sister, Claranelle Wilson, his children Donna Londino, Donnie Dunagan (Mary), and David Dunagan (Heather) as well as his grandchildren, Jason Londino, Jaclyn Harvey (Brenden), Gray Dunagan, Hunter Dunagan, Amber Roberson (Hunter), Drew Dunagan, Ben Dunagan, Will Dunagan, Kate Dunagan and great grandchildren, Pryor Londino, Everton Beamer, Rafael and Lana Harvey.

Visitation and a celebration of life with the family will be held Wednesday, February 19, 2025, from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors.
