Benny Orlando Obituary
Hollister - Benny C. Orlando, age 85, passed peacefully on Monday, October 29, 2018, surrounded by loving family and friends. Benny, beloved husband, dad and nonno was born on January 25, 1933 to Giacomo (Jimmy) and Maria Orlando in Piane Crati, Italy. As a boy he immigrated to the United States with his family to live in Salinas, California. In Salinas, he attended Sacred Heart Parish School, Salinas High School and Hartnell College. He was blessed to be always surrounded by family: his parents, sister, brother-in-law, nephews, nieces and cousins. He was soon drafted into the U.S. Army and served his country during the Korean War. He was stationed at various bases across the U.S. and Greenland working on Nike missiles. After finishing his military service, he traveled for vacation back to his Italian home town Piane Crati, where he met and fell in love with the most beautiful girl in town, Rita Ferraro. Several months later, they were married and he brought his new bride to Salinas. It is there that they made their home and raised their daughters, Mary and Patricia, while working hard as a brick mason at Rossi Masonry.
He loved planting and harvesting his backyard fruit and vegetable garden, with his pride being his peach and fig trees. He loved watching football and remained forever a loyal 49er fan. He enjoyed his Italian TV station where he could watch his soccer matches. His truest love was his family. He adored spending time with his grandchildren and through them, leaves an amazing legacy.
He is survived by his wife, Rita of 60 years as well as his children Mary (Will) White and Patricia (Robert) Forkner, as well as his treasured four grandchildren: Benjamin, Beatrice, James and Julianna. He is survived also by his loving sisters Rosa Rossi and Dora Davis. He will be missed beyond words.
Visitation will be held 5:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. Friday, November 2, 2018 at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis Street, Salinas, CA. 93901.
Rosary will be held 7:00p.m. Friday, November 2, 2018 at Struve and Laporte Chapel.
Mass will be 10:00a.m. Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 22 Stone Street, Salinas, CA. 93901.
Entombment to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas, CA. 93907.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Benny's honor to the American Parkinson's Disease Association (APPDA) at apdaparkinson.org.
