David Winkworth Obituary

David Douglas Winkworth, 47, of Franklin Park, died at 10:39 a.m. on Dec. 1, 2017, at Good Samaritan Hospice House in Wexford, Pa.

He was born Jan. 6, 1970, in Syracuse, New York, to Karen and Ralph Winkworth. Dave married Laurie Schomaker on July 28, 2001.

He is survived by his wife Laurie; his three children, Jake, Chloe, and Benjamin; his parents, Ralph and Karen of Brookville; his siblings, Geoffrey (married to Deirdre) of Montclair, Theresa (married to Chad) of Austin, William (married to Denise) of Philadelphia, and Benjamin (married to Daniele) of Oakdale; four nieces, Briana, Sarah, Emma, and Julia; and three nephews, Zachary, Ryan, and Geoffrey.

Dave grew up in Brookville, Pa., where he graduated from Brookville Area High School in 1988. Dave attended Penn State University, graduating in 1993 with a degree in Physical Education. Dave began his teaching career at Mary Walter Elementary School in Bealeton, Va., and eventually settled at Ingomar Middle School in North Allegheny School District. In addition to teaching Health and Physical Education, Dave inspired countless athletes during his many years coaching basketball. Dave was a long-time resident of Franklin Park where he and his wife Laurie raised their three children.

Dave lived his life based on a foundation of faith in God. Dave served as an Elder at Ross Presbyterian Church. His two greatest passions were his faith and his family. He was a devout husband and a loving father. Dave was a life-long athlete. His passions included basketball, hunting, fishing, archery, badminton, mountain biking, and the outdoors. Dave realized early on in his teaching career his largest impact would be felt through the influence he would have on children. Throughout his career Dave coached basketball at all levels and recreational softball, baseball, and soccer. Dave was a coach of sports and life. All that knew him were touched by his grace, wisdom, and integrity.

Visitation was from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, at George A. Thoma Funeral Home, Inc., 10418 Perry Hwy, Wexford, Pa. The funeral service was to follow Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Christ Church at Grove Farm, 249 Duff Road, Sewickley, Pa. Pastor Barry Mariana and Pastor Matt Olson officiated. The burial will be at Allegheny County Memorial Park, 1600 Duncan Ave, Allison Park, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to a scholarship for the Winkworth children via GoFundMe.com (https://www.gofundme.com/winkworth-children-scholarship-fund).

Our deepest condolences to Laurie, Jake, Chloe, and Ben. We did not have the honor of meeting David, nor his family, but have had the pleasure of knowing his brother for the better part of twenty years. Never the less, the messages posted here reflect on a young man with great compassion, respect, dedication, loyalty, and love not only for his family and those who knew him, but also for those who didn't have the pleasure of knowing him. Your family will be in our thoughts and prayers and we pray you find comfort and peace in God's embrace.

Dear Laurie, Jake, Chloe & Ben:
Words alone cannot express our feelings of sadness in losing Dave as a terrific neighbor, friend, teacher of our children at IMS and Coaching mentor for our son Steven. Dave was a special person. The type who doesn't come around very often.
Our family feels blessed to have gotten to know him and each of you. Please count on us in any way possible.
