Stephen Alan Hernly, 84, of New Castle passed away Friday, July 5, 2024 at The Willows of New Castle. He was born December 2, 1939 in New Castle to the late George Henry and Jane Elizabeth (Watson) Hernly.
Steve was a 1957 graduate of Mt. Summit High School where he participated in many activities including FFA. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and was a Veteran of the U.S. National Guard. On August 27, 1961, he married the love of his life, Nancy Jo Barkdull, and cared for her until her passing in 2021. He attended Purdue University and was an avid fan of anything Purdue. Agriculture and farming were his life. Steve was a hard worker and was always working on the farm. He was an active member of many organizations including a 36-year Board Director for the Henry County Farm Bureau Co-Op Ag-One Harvestland, longtime member of the Henry County Pork Producers Association, Henry County Board of Zoning Appeals, Henry County 4-H committee and Farmerama. In he and Nancy's later years, they enjoyed many fun vacations with family.
He is survived by his children, Susan Wallen and Chris (Ashlee) Hernly; grandchildren, Tyler Wallen (fiancé-Hannah LaBoyteaux), Devon Hernly and Lukas Hernly; great grandson, Zachariah Wallen; brothers and sisters in law, Martha (Walter) Stoots and Judy (Thomas) Hedrick; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Jo Hernly and a niece, Michele Stoots.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Willows and Henry County Hospice for the compassionate care Steve received in his final days.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Mark Herbkersman officiating. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
