In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and was a Veteran of the U.S. National Guard. On August 27, 1961, he married the love of his life, Nancy Jo Barkdull, and cared for her until her passing in 2021. He attended Purdue University and was an avid fan of anything Purdue. He was an active member of many organizations including a 36-year Board Director for the Henry County Farm Bureau Co-Op Ag-One Harvestland, longtime member of the Henry County Pork Producers Association, Henry County Board of Zoning Appeals, Henry County 4-H committee and Farmerama. In he and Nancy's later years, they enjoyed many fun vacations with family.

He is survived by his children, Susan Wallen and Chris (Ashlee) Hernly; grandchildren, Tyler Wallen (fiancé-Hannah LaBoyteaux), Devon Hernly and Lukas Hernly; great grandson, Zachariah Wallen; brothers and sisters in law, Martha (Walter) Stoots and Judy (Thomas) Hedrick; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Jo Hernly and a niece, Michele Stoots.

The family would like to thank the staff of The Willows and Henry County Hospice for the compassionate care Steve received in his final days.
