Arthur Jerbert Obituary

North Stonington - Arthur Henri Jerbert, 89, of North Stonington, beloved husband of Marilyn Jerbert, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2020, at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich.

Born in Seattle, Wash., he was the son of Arthur Rudolf Jerbert and Alwine Prins and lived in North Stonington for the past 15 years.

Arthur will be remembered for his lifelong devotion and dedication to his country and his community. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and had a passion for books and classic movies. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1962 including sea duty during World War II. He began his naval career by volunteering for the Naval Officer Training program. He then served on several submarines, including the USS Flying Fish, USS Cusk, and USS Barracuda. He patrolled the Aleutian Islands and subsequently was a member of a nine-submarine "wolf pack" in the Sea of Japan. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V". He spent time overseas in London and retired in 1962 as commander.

Arthur was selfless in his service and a determined problem-solver as he dedicated his time and energy to the community. He coached Ledyard's Little League and Babe Ruth teams. In 1971, he became the first mayor of Ledyard. During his tenure there he was responsible for creating the Up-Down Sawmill Park as well as numerous other projects. When he lived in North Stonington, he compiled and published the Bicentennial Remembrance Book. He also served on the board of education and the ad hoc facilities committee for North Stonington Public Schools.

Arthur's other great passion was teaching. He taught in the mathematics department at Norwich Free Academy, several private schools, and ended his career at Griswold High School, retiring as math department head in 1995.

In addition to his wife, Marilyn, he is survived by children, Jeffrey Jerbert of Willington, Arthur Jerbert Jr. of Groton, Marie Campbell of Colchester, Dorothy Perez of Sammamish, Wash., James Fredric Jerbert of Ocean, N.J., Evelyn Hale of Round Hill, Va., and Carolyn Baker-Reck and Daniel Baker, both of North Stonington. He is also survived by his former wife, Sylva (Booker); 15 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by his sister, Jeanne Bates of Aptos, Calif., and his daughter, Kathryn Schenk of Ledyard.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no calling hours. There will be a private ceremonial scattering of his ashes on Long Island Sound.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either ECHO Cancer Foundation, 330 Washington St., Suite 220, Norwich CT 06360 or to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Ave., NY NY 10021.

Arthur was a great guy - it was my privilege to have worked with him in recent years and I came to realize what a visionary he was. He had numerous ideas for improving his community and all of them were good. I will miss him. Vilma Gregoropoulos, North Stonington

I had Mr. Jerbert for math at Griswold High School back in the late 80s. I have always said he was the best teacher I ever had. No one prepared me for college as well as he did. My condolences to his family and friends.
