Duncan Olding Obituary

Groton - Duncan Olding, 92, of Groton, died at home in the care of his loving wife, assisted by Hospice, Christmas Eve 2025. He was born Jan. 16, 1933, in Fall River, Mass., to Harold Duncan Olding and Jane Ella Marsden Olding.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Shirley Parkinson, in 1978; and by their daughter Jennifer in 1969. Surviving him are daughters, Linda Olding and her husband David Hall of Towson, Md., and Leslie Olding and her husband Laurin Killian of Groton; grandchildren, Kayla Hall and Derek Hall of Maryland.

Duncan received a bachelor of science degree in engineering from Brown University in 1955 and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Connecticut in 1964. At Brown, he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and was elected to the Tau Beta Pi honorary society. He was employed by Fairchild Engine Division in Deer Park, N.Y., for several years before joining General Dynamics Electric Boat Division where he retired as a principal engineer in 1995.

He and Charlotte Barnum were married in 1984.

Duncan was an enthusiastic golfer for over 70 years. He particularly enjoyed his association with the Shennecossett Men's Club, serving as club secretary for 26 years. He also served on Groton's Golf Advisory Board and the Board of Directors of the Connecticut State Golf Association. He greatly enjoyed the close friendships developed over many years and thousands of rounds of golf at Shennecossett. He and his wife were happy to wave to each other, she from her garden, he from the fairway beyond their home.

My condolences to Duncan's family. He was a calm gentle soul of an EB coworker with a joy for life. I'm glad I knew and worked with him and may he rest in peace.

Charlotte, Linda, Leslie and families
My condolences. Duncan was a good friend and neighbor and we enjoyed many hours together on the golf course. Linda and Leslie, I remember you growing up with Bill and Donna and then all of you going to school together from kindergarten to high school. Though I no longer live in Groton, I still have very good memories of Duncan and your family.
