Upon his retirement in 1989, he served as executive director of Project Independence and an interpreter at Mystic Seaport. He taught as an adjunct professor at Hartford College. He was elected chairman of the Endowment and Development Board of St. Thomas More School in Montville.

Fran was active in his home town of Salem where he lived at Great Oaks Farm for 51 years. Involved in state and local politics, he was continuously elected to various town offices and committees. In public service for 40 years, he was elected selectman, chairman of the board of finance, board of education, town meeting moderator, and served on the fire station building committee, school building committees, Salem Green Cemetery, library board and many others.

He was a direct descendant of Pilgrim William Brewster and Governor Moses Robinson of Vermont. Fran was the justice of the peace for my wedding almost thirty years ago, so it goes without saying he played an integral part of my life. His many accomplishments make it easy to see how many people he touched in a positive way. A life very well lived.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your father had such a rich life!! My parents Nikolas and JoAnne Len were involved in many community projects with your father. I recall many fun times at the farm.

We were very sorry to hear that Fran had passed. He was a great friend to my parents, as well as a friend to us.
He was a remarkable person with such a wide range of knowledge and experience. How wonderful that he was given the time to pursue his multitude of interests.
He will be greatly missed, our sympathy to you all.

Fran was my eighth grade teacher at Hebron Elementary. I always admired his shined shoes, shirt and tie and his approach to teaching.
He was chairman of the Board of Finance when I was elected Supt of Schools in Salem. People were surprised when we got along so well and reached consensus.
Later we were colleagues in the Supt’s Association when he was at Learn. He was a collaborative leader and a mentor to me during my first superintendency.
