Gemma Moran Obituary
Groton - Gemma E. Moran, founder of the Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center, died Tuesday morning, May 16, 2023.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, at Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Drive, Groton. She will be buried privately with her family in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, Mass.
Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton, is assisting with the arrangements. Please make donations to the Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center, 374 Broad St., New London, CT 06320. Please visit www.Byles.com to sign the guestbook, share a memory or ask for directions.

To Gemma and family-
A sweet and beautiful soul. I remember all the help you did Gemma for so many in the area who had nothing. Many of us were in awe and even our unions at L&M Hospital would focus on making your example of kindness our mantra of how we would do business keeping the food drives as a focus of our theme for those less fortunate. Your organization was something you started so small to help those in such need similar to a small pebble in the pond creating a small wave of help and kindness to those in the most vulnerable situations - then- growing into a steel force for those in the area needing help for such a basic human need - food. What a great legacy you started here in Connecticut. It was such an honor to have met you and see you in person - a quiet force of good that created an engaging legacy for Southeastern Connecticut. Now, rest in peace and may your legacy live on.

I met Gemma the summer of 2017 working across the street from her home
I remember seeing her watching as I worked as I got from one end of the yard to the other I looked and she was at the fence of the yard I was working in and flagged me over to speak to me
Young man she says you look like you have a clue
I said excuse me
I would love for you to come work at my house it´s a mess and I´d love for you to put some ideas in to it and make it beautiful
Very proud of the things in life she accomplished nothing more than the special pear tree her group donated to her in her front yard 15 yrs ago was falling apart but I told her I would keep it alive and not have to cut it down she had more spunk than a 20 yr old ready to work
I took pride in helping her yard look as good as I could every week was better and better
May her roses we planted every yr there grow bigger and more beautiful as to remember how big of heart and thoughtful she was and how thousands of lives she´s helped

Dear Gemma, Your passing has left an aching emptiness throughout Southeastern Connecticut. You were loved, respected and revered.
I, like others, had the good fortune to hear Gemma speak many times. She spoke quietly, respectfully, and with biting great humor. She always got her point across. Even if she had to stand up, lean over a boardroom table and mince not a word. She wanted help feeding the hungry.
She never took credit. She gave all credit to the companies, the unions, the United Way, the food pantries, the foundations, and individuals who collected food, and money for food.
Rest in peace, Gemma. With love and deepest respect. I will forever miss you.

To the family, friends and hundreds of people who knew Gemma, my condolences: I met Gemma once many years ago. I am a member of the Ledyard Rotary Club. Yesterday, May 20, 2023, the Rotary Clubs of Ledyard, Groton, Montville, Norwich Noontime and Norwich Sunrise packaged 11,680 meals for those with food insecurity for The Gemma Moran - United Way Food Center in New London. We had a moment of silence in honor of Gemma before we began. Gemma was a great lady!

Sorry for your loss. Praying your family at this time. Gemma was a sweet lady and treated my wife and I well. We rented from her on her residence on Baker Avenue upstairs . We remember her making us her famous meatballs and having my wife and I for dinner. She will be missed.

To Gemma's family and friends, my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time, What Gemma meant and means to this community I don't have the words to say, A lot of people didn't go hungry and Gemma made sure of that, Gemma came over to millstone about 25 yrs ago and talked to us about her program, I was so impressed with her caring of the people she was trying to help and she couldn't do it alone without her people that worked for her.

The first time I met Gemma was at a union counseling class. She shared tons of stories with us and had the whole class in tears we were laughing so hard. She will be greatly missed by many. RIP Gemma
