To the family-
When we needed a fundraiser for an Olympian from Waterford in the 90s Louise Appleby arranged a pancake dinner in the High School cafeteria. She also arranged for guest waiters. Her choices were all restaurantours, including Hughie. With proceeds and raffled items it was a success and Bethany made it to the Olympics in Sweden. RIP Hughie and Louise.

Hughie will be missed. Still remember him, Hughie Sr. and Mom being there for our weekend visits from the CGA. Remember him telling he had bet the bar on Smokin' Joe in the Ali Frazier fight. Later in life when my daughter's water polo team played Conn. College, treated the girls to lunch at Hughie's new place. Still have a pic with Hughie and the Brown U. team. A helluva guy. I will really miss him.

Arlene and family, We are saddened to hear of Hughies passing! We will always remember the good times we all had together over 35 years! His jokes still ring in my head and your love for each other was unmatched! He always called me " A diamond in the rough" and I will hold that dear to my heart and remember him with a smile on my face. Much love and Godspeed David and Deanna ❤

My most sincere condolences to the Devlin family during this difficul time. I had the pleasure of working for Mr. Devlin and his mother over 20 years ago. Despite the fact that I only washed dishes at his business, he always took the time to make me and everyone else in the restaurant feel like family. I remember how proud he was of his father's career and legacy. My most endearing memory of Mr. Devlin was right before I left the restaurant. I told him that i needed to buy a car but I didn't know where to go or what to do since I had recently migrated to the US, Hugh pulled me out of work and took me to his car dealer. He was with me while I looked at several cars, and even though we couldn't find the right car for me that day, his act of kindness has always stayed with me. Rest in peace Mr. Devlin, you'll be missed.

A New London legend has passed. Rest in peace Hughie. You gave so much to the city. There are so many people who would not know where New London was if not for you. You survived the worst and have left a legacy of resurgence for downtown. You will be missed, but never forgotten. Sincere condolences to all of the Devlin Family.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Susie and Family,
Very sorry for the loss to you and Hughie's entire family. He was also family to so many of us and will be missed. Anytime he knew I was in town he would come visit me and was upset if no one let him know I was around. He was "New London". Through him I was welcomed everywhere simply because I was his friend. Family and Friends meant the world to Hughie. We were always known as the Belmont Boys from Providence and we will honor his memory always. May he Rest In Peace.Condolences to all who loved him.

I grew up on Bank St near the Traystman hot dog factory. Hughie, who was older, would play with me and his first cousin Frankie, whenever he visited. He gave me the name of Hisky Disky primarily because he couldn't speak my Greek moniker. In later years we would run into each other and refresh our friendship. He was a caring guy who would do whatever he could to help you. He shall be missed by many, especially his love salad customers. May his memory be eternal.
