It doesn´t seem 14 years since you prick my heart with your loving kindness and your particular way of letting people know that they were family when you first met them and I wanna say I will never forget the moment you told me I was family forever. You are always going to be in my heart and I will never ever forget you And I hope Heaven is enjoying you because you was truly an angel on earth.

I often think of him, and he often tugs at my heart. I truly miss him and that infectious smile. I always felt and was treated like family from the very beginning even from the first time I met him. It is a feeling I will never forget. Mann always kept family first that was very important to him and it showed. I will never forget the mark you left on my heart and I will always miss you and love you forever

I still miss him deeply and dearly and he is often tugging at my heart. It was that smile that he always greeted you with, and never ever made you feel less than family, even if you just joined. When someone leaves an imprint on your heart they can never be forgotten. James was that person a.k.a. Mann. I loved you then and I will love you always.

My deepest condolences from my family to yours. James touched so many people in our state and beyond, not just the youth he cared so much about in New London. Sallie, trust in God to hold you up during the painful times. Bebe, you are an incredible sister and cared so much for James. My prayers are with you.
I wish I could have been there but that was not possible. I cherish my last conversation with James. I know he is resting in peace. Keep the good memories and keep him alive in your hearts. Rest in Peace, Man.

I got a phone message the other day from child-hood friend Reggie that "we lost another one, Rick" and that James had past away. James was another child-hood friend of mine that made the harsh jump from Winthrop School and Main Street to Bartlett School and Broad Street with class and hard work. I say he made the harsh jump for many reasons but one was that the B-Ball courts back then where always full with waiting players. I remember meeting him in a pickup game at Winthrop School court. He was called "Man" then and was no more than 10 or 11 years old. Man got to N.L.H. S. after I graduated but we always remained friends. After he founded the "Hoopsters" we began coaching many talented state wide ballers including his two sons, Darren and Deon. Sally I hope your heart remains full with only the good memories of Man, and I am truly sorry for your lose. Darren and Deon I hope for the rest of your lives you strive to reach and surpass the legacy your dad leaves you both, and I feel your loses. If there is such a thing as a "NEW LONDON GUY" James "MAN" JOHNSON will be remembered as one of those. Jump on my friend, you will be missed and remembered .

So sorry to hear of your loss. I considered Jimmy a good friend. We first met in 1974 playing againest each other, he Nl, me NFA. We officiated off and on for a number of years. Jim was the kind of guy who you wouldn`t see for years and then talk for hours. The last time I enjoyed his company was at one of New London`s state championship games. We happened to be in the same area and sat and talked for almost the whole game, catching up on life. Jim was a great guy and always had nothing but good things to say. The area lost a good one. RIP my friend, you`ll never be forgotten.

I met James in the mid-to-late 1980's through basketball. While always looking for the very best competition around, I ended up in an environment where James played regularly. We went on to play in local leagues, and in State tournaments, where I had the privilege of sharing the platform with James and 8 other talented ball players, on a State Tournament Gold Medal Team.
What I remember about James was that he was very observant. He would play or watch an opponent for a short period of time, and could tell you that players strengths and weaknesses; which often came in handy as our team shut opponents down. Even after James stopped playing on the State Tournament level, he never lost his passion for basketball or his support of most sports.
I lost touch with James over the years, and would run into him occasionally in various parts of South Eastern Connecticut. I was saddened to recently learn of his struggle and untimely passing. It is my hope that the Johnson family remember all the good things that James represented, as I will, and may all of you remain strong in the shadow of his legacy.
