John Hartnett Obituary

Old Lyme - John "Jack" Hartnett passed away peacefully in his sleep Nov. 10, 2022 after 93 wonderful years of a great life. Jack was born in Malden, Mass., one sister and two brothers, and lived in Old Lyme, for 60 years.

Jack had an inherent Irish wit, always enjoyed a good laugh and approached life on the brighter side which brought smiles to family and friends. Jack served in the Korean War with the U.S. Navy on submarines. He earned a BSEE degree and worked for the U.S. Government specializing in the field of electromagnetic interference protection. Jack enjoyed running, golf, chess, horse racing and family.

Jack married Lee in 1963, and had daughter Kelly who brought him grandson Zach.

After retirement, Jack found a new passion of painting. Jack happily relaxed in his basement for hours listening to multiple TVs, eating chocolate delights and making beautiful paintings of people, animals and space.

Jack will be greatly missed by all the lives he touched. The burial will be a private family ceremony. A memorial dinner is in the planning phase.

Dear family and friends of Jack,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Jack´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor in the U.S. Submarine Force.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
To the family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
Jim Sandman, FTC(SS) Ret,
National Chaplain, USSVI.

I met Jack at NUSC. He took me under his wing and taught me about Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and the Navy system. He was technically great to work with both at NUSC and on the road - and his sense of humor always made the work interesting and fun. One minor example of this is the time he received an unofficial award for moving the most people at NUSC in the least amount of time - an impressive feat that even the NUSC Captains never accomplished, even though he did it while joking with a group of people during a Christmas Party and his hand accidentally hit a Fire Alarm causing the whole building to empty out!! I really enjoyed working with him and was not prepared for the announcement of his retirement from NUSC. I couldn't imagine what the place would be like without him. Fair winds and following seas, Jack, you were the greatest.
