Katherine Sonnenburg Obituary

Mystic - The family of Katherine W. Sonnenburg shares the sad news of her death Jan. 12, 2022, after a lengthy illness at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, New London, where she was born Aug. 16, 1953. She rebounded many times from relapses to continue her zest for life, but her last challenge was too much.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert G. Sonnenburg; her parents, Burton and Eunice White of Mystic; and her sister, Susan K. White.

Her survivors include her sister, Claudia W. Gilmartin of Berwick, Maine; nieces, Jennifer Radl, Diana Dhabolt and Adele Schneider; and nephews, Andrew, Mark and Philip Larese-Casanova and Richard H. W. Engle. She was proud to be a great-aunt as well as a great-great-aunt to many.

While at Fitch Senior High, she played the flute in the band all three years, graduating in 1971. "Kate" enjoyed skiing at Okemo in Vermont and horseback riding in her youth. She was always up for a party, entertaining family and friends with her delicious meals.

She trained at the then New England Business College for her career as an administrative assistant for positions in EB's safety department, and Tracor which is now part of BAE Systems.

Her love of animals, particularly black labs and cats filled her home with joyous welcomes to arrivals. To honor her passing, the family suggests memorial gifts to a favorite animal rescue of your choice.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions a celebration of her life will be held later this year.

There is no need here to describe what a wonderful, kind and generous person Kate was. Anyone reading this already knows that. A better friend you could not find.
I want to express my deepest sympathy to her family and her many many friends.
She is terribly missed and always will be.

I worked with Kate in Newport and have fond memories of staying at her house with my son Justin. We would go to Foxwoods and Bob and Justin would hang out. Always a fun weekend.

To Katie´s family,
I was shocked to hear the news of my dear friend. We worked together at EB but as life takes all of us down separate paths we tend to lose contact. Nevertheless, I thought of her often and although I did not get to see her often over the years, she was never forgotten by me. We have all lost an amazing person. My prayers are with her family.
Blessings, Ann Byles

It is with great sadness that I learn of the passing of Katie. We were close friends throughout our school years. We had so many fun times together. I especially enjoyed camping with the White family on Cape Cod.
I will always remember our friendship with fond memories and a smile.
Sending my deepest sympathy to Claudia and all of the family. Rest in heavenly peace my dear friend.

Kate was a lot of fun and a good friend. I am glad I got the opportunity to know and work with her. She will be missed by all.
