Laura Kezer Obituary

Orange, Vt.- Laura Effingham Kezer, a devoted educator, accomplished knitter, and lifelong advocate for the natural world and social justice, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on July 28, 2025, at the age of 86 in Orange, Vt.

"Lolly," which was her childhood nickname and what she chose to be called as a grandmother, was born in September 1938 in New Jersey to Lawrence and Ann Pritchard. Laura grew up immersed in the natural beauty of the countryside. She spent her childhood exploring the woods near her rural home, often accompanied by her beloved dog "Mister" and horses - a deep connection to animals and the outdoors that would guide her values and career.

Laura is survived by her children, Jeremy Kezer (wife Kim) of Amesbury, Mass., Jennifer Davies (husband Simon) of Orange, Vt.; her grandson Rhys Davies; and her sister Robin Benoit (husband Ben); and beloved extended family.

A graduate of Connecticut College, Laura began her professional journey at McGraw Hill Publishing in New York City. In 1972, she helped open the Mystic marine life Aquarium in Connecticut, serving as the founding - and in the beginning - sole member of its education department. Her pioneering work laid the groundwork for the aquarium's long-standing reputation in marine science education and public engagement. She held many positions in the Aquarium culminating as the Aquarium's director. As director, she oversaw significant expansions of the Aquarium including the addition of the Penguin Pavilion in 1989, helping to attract and educate even more visitors.

After leaving the aquarium, her passion for environmental education and community support led her to impactful roles at the EarthWays Center in St. Louis, Mo., where she worked on sustainability initiatives, and at the Johnny Cake Center in Westerly, R.I., supporting their social services mission.

Even in retirement, her passion of education and curiosity led her to volunteer at the Outdoor Learning Center in Avon, Ind. She also volunteered her time at the Hendricks County Hospital and even fostered multiple litters of orphaned kittens in conjunction with the Misty Eyes Animal Rescue in Avon.

Laura was also an accomplished knitter. She was a member of the Indianapolis Knitting Guild, and she created countless hand-knit items for various charitable programs dear to her heart. Her signature creations were custom, heirloom-quality holiday stockings, lovingly made for friends and families - each one a unique work of art. Her knitting was both an artistic outlet and a quiet act of service.

A private Celebration of her Life will be attended by her family. If you are inspired to honor her, please pick a favorite conservation, education, or public institution to donate time or financial support.

I worked with Laura for many years that I was on the Boards for the Aquarium and the Sea Research Fdn. Laura was a very bright, professional individual and I very much enjoyed working with her. May she rest in peace.

To Laura's family -- I am so sorry for your loss. I met Laura during her time at the Mystic Marinelife Aquarium. I always admired her commitment to her greater community, her way with people and her sense of humor. She donated her time to help me out with some projects in Mystic. It was easy to talk to her and I appreciated all the times she patiently listened while I went on about something. The world could use more people like her.

Godspeed, Laura.

Jennifer & Simon, Jeremy & Kim, I'm sending heartfelt condolences to all of you. Laura was one of those very special people I am grateful that crossed my path and I will never forget her. Through her exceptional leadership she developed a team of us who together brought the Aquarium to a special place both as a visitor and and as an ambassador. A legacy not many can achieve! I am sure she will be missed by you, but her memories will live on through you and your children. Rest in peace Laura.
