Peter Littlefield Obituary

Mystic - Peter Franklin Littlefield, 87, died in Mystic March 7, 2025. Peter was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Phyllis Thornton Littlefield.

Peter was born May 22, 1937, in Bronxville, N.Y., the son of Prescott H. and Margaret (Meredith) Littlefield. He grew up in Darien. After receiving a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1960, he completed the Naval Officers Candidates program and served as a deck officer aboard the USS Valcour, Flagship Middle East Force, and as Executive Officer aboard the ocean-going tug, USS Koka, in California. He received the National Defense and Connecticut Veterans service medals. Peter received a MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1966.

Married Sept. 3, 1965, Peter and Phyllis spent their early marriage years in Long Beach, Calif. and Worcester, Mass. In 1969, they settled in Old Greenwich and raised their two sons, Prescott and William. Peter was a principal of Malcolm Black Associates, acting as a marketing specialist for anti-corrosive engineering products. In 1994, Peter and Phyllis resettled in Noank.

An avid sailor, Peter served as a Commodore of Riverside Yacht Club, a Fleet Captain of Ram Island Yacht Club and was a member of Cruising Club of America. Each year while their boys were young, the Littlefield family cruised on their sloop, Pearl, traveling from Greenwich along the Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts coasts.

Peter volunteered at Mystic Seaport Museum, in the Pilot Program and a docent for museum exhibits. As a licensed captain, Peter delighted in taking museum visitors for a ride on Resolute's tender. Peter loved family genealogy and was active in the historical societies of Noank, and Weston, Vt. At their Weston, Vt. vacation home, Peter and Phyllis enjoyed cross-country skiing.

Peter is survived by his sons, Prescott and William; daughter-in-law Anne; and grandsons, Matthew, Nate, Peter and Charlie. Peter is remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

A time of remembrance will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. March 15, at Stoneridge, 186 Jerry Browne Road, Mystic. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. June 7, at the Noank Baptist Church, 18 Cathedral Heights Rd, Noank. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Noank Baptist Church or Mystic Seaport Museum.

Rest in Peace

Peter was a delightful person to know, with his bright personality and outlook, constant sense of corny humor, his joy of passing on some historical insight or personal anecdote, and his exuberant and unfailing friendliness. Phyllis was gracious and understated compared to her more outgoing husband, but one of the most genuinely nice and decent people you could ever meet. Together, they were one of our favorite couples in Noank. They were generous with us in so many ways. Both Wendy and I will always treasure our friendship with them and remember them well. And we´ll never take a trip to Vermont without thinking of the two of them.

I didn't know Mr. Littlefield, however I own 2 Ordway wicker rocking chairs manufactured by his great-great grandfather. In researching the origins of the rockers I found a letter he wrote to Koreshan Unity State museum inquiring about chair patents. When I sit in my chair I sometimes think of the family that patented this unique rocker platform. Interestingly I purchased my second rocker at an antique store on March 7th and my grandfathers name was Littlefield. My sincere condolences, Dr. Nancy Fernandes
