Robert Nickerson Obituary
Born in Providence, R.I., on Aug. 3, 1929, he was the son of the late Leon and Alice (Jenks) Nickerson and grew up in Edgewood, R.I. He married Nancy Putnam Whittemore in Concord, N.H., in November 1956.
Bob graduated with a BSME from MIT where he was commodore of the MIT Nautical Association, a national dinghy champion, and later selected for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Hall of Fame. After graduation, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.
His career encompassed management positions in several instrument manufacturing companies, the last being Veeder-Root Co. of Hartford, where he was managing director of Veeder-Root Ltd in Dundee, Scotland. He was a consultant and involved in real estate until his retirement in 1991.
Bob was a member of Mason's Island Yacht Club, Ram Island Yacht Club, Off Soundings Club, Baldwin Yacht Club, ROMEOs, and Nauyaug Cruising Club and active in civic and community organizations.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, David P. Nickerson and daughter-in-law, Cynthia Nickerson, of Noank; his daughter, Sarah (Nickerson) Enright of Hamilton, Mass.; four grandchildren, Daniel Nickerson and Katherine, Ellen, and Julia Enright; his brothers, Richard E. Nickerson of Cranston, R.I., and Russell J. Nickerson of Mystic; his niece, Tracy J. Nickerson of Cranston, R.I.; and his nephews, Russell J. Nickerson Jr. of Mystic, and Christopher W. Nickerson of Chatham, N.J.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Jennifer.
A memorial celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at Mystic Congregational Church, 43 E. Main St., Mystic, with a reception following. Burial will be private at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Center for Hospice Care Southeastern Connecticut, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360, or New England Science & Sailing Foundation, P.O. Box 733, Stonington, CT 06378.

Nancy and family,
Please accept my condolences in your loss of Nick. I remember good times with you and the Wrays during Trinity Parish days. Pat and I last saw you at Jim Schumaker's funeral and knew that Nick was ill then. I have been a widow for 13 years. With Faith, family,and friends you will get through these sad days.

Tony and I have very fond memories of Nick. I remember having my first sailing experience with Nick at the helm in Nick's sail boat when we visited Nancy and Nick on Mason's island. He was so full or life and just loved that sailing! I know he will be missed by his family and friends. The Marchese family extend their sincere condolences.
