Roger Christiansen Obituary

Waterford - Roger Secrist Christiansen, an Emmy Award-winning television director, beloved educator, and spiritual seeker, passed away in July 2025 at the age of 72. Known for his generosity, charisma, and global outlook, Roger lived a life marked by artistic achievement, quiet wisdom, and deep personal connection.

Born in New London, Oct. 2, 1952, Roger's creative path began at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center when he was just a teenager, where, what started as a maintenance job soon led to opportunities that developed his lifelong passion for photography, video, and storytelling. His talents soon led him to the Sundance Institute in Utah, where he headed production at Robert Redford's prestigious festival - marking the beginning of a long and influential career in film and television. Throughout his life, Roger remained closely connected to the O'Neill, eventually serving on its Board of Trustees. He was a deeply valued presence in the community, maintaining lasting relationships and always honoring the place where his journey began.

In 1978, Roger moved to New York City to work as a cameraman on commercials and music videos and began teaching at Columbia University's Film Division. He later joined the faculty of the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, where he taught for over two decades and influenced a generation of filmmakers. His dedication to teaching took him around the world, including Havana, Tokyo, and Taipei, where he served as a Fulbright Scholar. In the later chapter of his career, Roger spent ten years at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts at Fudan University, where he served as a Master Director and Teacher.

Roger's television career flourished beginning with the sitcom "Murphy Brown" in 1990. After joining the Directors Guild of America, he went on to hold a range of roles in the industry - including camera coordinator, associate director, and ultimately, director. He went on to work on over 50 television sitcoms, including "Suddenly Susan," "Girlfriends," "Friends," and "Hannah Montana." He earned an Emmy Award for his work on "Friends," and a BET Outstanding Director nomination for the show Girlfriends. He ended his television career on a high note, directing an episode of the rebooted "Night Court" - a proud and joyful finale to decades of creative work.

In the last decade of his life, Roger's path deepened through Buddhism and his marriage to his beloved wife, Yuki. Together, they cultivated a life rooted in mindfulness, compassion, and joy. Their shared spiritual practice shaped how Roger approached living, his work, his relationships, and his sense of purpose.

More recently, Roger and Yuki returned to Waterford, not far from where his journey began. They could often be seen walking through the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center grounds with their dog, Tina Turner, enjoying the peace of the place that first nurtured his creative spark.

Roger had a profound impact on the lives of students, collaborators, family and friends around the world. He had a way of making people feel seen, heard, and truly valued. He touched the lives of countless people with his humility, humor, and unwavering presence. His kindness and generosity were ever-present. Roger could always be counted on for thoughtful advice, a warm laugh, or help without hesitation. Whether in a classroom, on a set, or in a quiet conversation, he brought light and passion to every moment.

He was deeply loved and will be remembered as a devoted husband, a beloved uncle, brother, and lifelong friend. He loved freely; his warmth, humor, and steady presence left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Roger is survived by his wife, Yuki; and a wide circle of loving family, dear friends, and former students who carry his wisdom forward.

Roger Christiansen lived fully - with an open heart, a generous spirit, and a deep belief in the power of story and connection. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Eugene O'Neill Theater (Sunken Garden), 305 Great Neck Road, Waterford.

My condolences to Yuki and Roger's family. I knew Roger since we were eighteen and he had an apartment on Vauxhall Street on the third floor with a swing in the living room. I used to hang out in the dark room of O'Neil and he taught me all the basics of photography. I was so glad to follow Roger's career and see him do so well. He was such a creative and kind person and he stayed in touch with his old friends back home. I really enjoyed meeting up a couple of years ago for lunch in Mystic. I told him I was going to Italy and what should I bring to take pictures. He said " just bring your phone." He was right! You will be missed Roger and thought of whenever I take pictures.

I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Roger. Such an amazing guy. In the 70´s we all headed out to find ourselves and landed in Santa Cruz California. Roger was already there with John Bailey and Byron and I showed up shortly after. Byron and I rented a little studio right next door to Roger! The Peter Pan Motel, I think it was called! Roger was energetic, and motivated with his love of photography; his passion as it turned out! I always loved his smile and zest for life, his kindness and free spirit! We lost touch over the years, but I do remember a summer he was working on a theater for TV project, and he invited me for a tour. Amazing... and I was honored! One thing about Roger, while he became loaded with accolades through his work, he never forgot his hometown friends! I was unaware that he moved back home. I wish I had known. I have fond and laughable memories in our encounter in life. I was able to save some early photos he took of Byron and I at the arboretum!!! I keep one on my end table at home!!! My prayers are with the family in this sad time . Heaven gained an Angel!!! Love you Roger, Patti...
