Roger Dickinson Obituary

Stonington - Roger Henry Dickinson passed away Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008.

Skip was born in Hartford on June 7, 1925, to Mary Honiss and Roger Henry Dickinson. He attended Kingswood School in West Harford and graduated from Taft School and Dartmouth College, where he was a member of the varsity lacrosse team.

After college he spent a season in Aspen, Colo., ski-bumming before returning to Hartford to begin a career in advertising. He started out as a copywriter at Baker Advertising. During his years in Hartford he was a member of the University Glee Club.

In 1960 he moved to Suffield to work at Remington Advertising in Springfield, Mass., eventually retiring as president of the firm. He then spent several more years as a free-lance copywriter from his home in Suffield before retiring completely and moving to Stonington in 1980.

Growing up, he spent summers at the Connecticut shore, sailing and racing a Zip and later a Luders 16 in Niantic Bay. He continued his love of sailing and racing with friends on larger boats, including 40 years of Off Soundings races, two Bermuda Races, and a trip from Iceland to Jamestown, R.I. He also sailed extensively in the Caribbean.

His love of boating led him to Mystic Seaport, where for many years he was a member of the Pilots, a special members' group that performs work projects for the Museum. He also volunteered with the Museum's collections specialists and spent many hours at the Museum's Boathouse, helping visitors to use the rowboats and sailboats there.

He leaves his wife, Cornelia Wilde Dickinson, three children and their spouses, Amy and Andy German, Sam and Sally Dickinson, Roger and Laurie Dickinson, and their children, Caroline, Martha, Mary and Remy as well as several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his sister, Marilyn Graulty of Hatchets Point, East Lyme, and her children.

Skip had a great love for his family, Dartmouth, skiing, sailboats and dogs.

Memorial contributions to the Connecticut State Library for the Blind, 198 West St., Rocky Hill, CT 06067 would be appreciated.

I am standing upon the seashore.
The ships at my side spread their white sails to the morning breeze and start for the blue ocean. They are objects of beauty and strength and I stand and watch them until at length they hang like specks of white clouds just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, "There! They're gone."
Gone where?
Gone from my sight - that is all.

They are just as large in mast and hull and spar as they were when they left my side, and just as able to bear their load of living freight to the place of their destination. Their diminished size is in me, not in them; and just at the moment when someone at my side says, "There! Their gone," there are other eyes watching them coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "There! They come!

"Sail on Skipper."

Skip was an extraordinary gentleman and skilled mariner. I was priveledged to have shared watches with him on sailboats in Iceland, Bermuda and the Caribbean. May the wind be at your back, Skip, on your final voyage.
