Scott Sears Obituary

Warrensville, N.C. - RADML, USN (Ret.) Scott L. Sears, passed away peacefully at his home in Warrensville on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with Multiple Systems Atrophy.

Rear Admiral Sears was born on June 12, 1945 in Cleburne, Texas. He graduated from The Kincaid School in Houston and was admitted to the U.S. Naval Academy in the summer of 1962. He graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1966 with bachelor of science degrees in physics and economics. He completed Naval Submarine School in 1966 in Groton and subsequently served aboard the USS Barbel as supply officer and USS Gudgeon as communicator. Both submarines were home-ported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. From 1970 to 1971, he attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Burke Scholar and graduated with a master of science degree in electrical engineering as well as a professional engineering degree in electrical engineering. After attending Naval Nuclear Power School in Bainbridge, Md., he served aboard the USS Spadefish as the weapons officer and the USS Flying Fish as the navigator in Norfolk, Va. Aboard the USS Henry L. Stimson in Charleston, S.C., he served as executive officer. From 1980 to 1982, he led the Plans, Programs and Advanced Systems Section on the Chief of Naval Operations staff at the Pentagon. From 1983 to 1986, he commanded USS Albuquerque, home-ported in Groton, after which he became deputy commander for Training and Operations of Submarine Squadron Seventeen at Sub Base Bangor, Wash. He returned to the Chief of Naval Operations staff at the Pentagon in 1989 and oversaw the Tactical Weapons Branch. In 1989, he was assigned to Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters as program manager for the development of the combat system for the next-generation attack submarine, Seawolf. He was selected to flag rank as an acquisition professional in January 1991. From 1992 until his retirement in 1995, he was commander, Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Newport, R.I. Admiral Sears was also a graduate of Duke University's School of Business, advanced management program and the national defense university capstone program. Personal awards include two Legion of Merits, three Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals and two Navy Achievement Medals.

In 1995 upon completion of his tour as commander of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, he retired from the Navy. Following employment at AT&T, General Dynamics, and Raytheon, he retired to Ashe County, N.C. Wanting to serve the community where he had chosen to retire, Rear Admiral Sears was active on the county and regional library boards, served as a member of the Blue Ridge Electric Membership Advisory Committee, volunteered as a coordinator for the county's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, and was a founding member of the Ashe County Frescoes Foundation where he was a past president. For two consecutive years, he was a volunteer helping spearhead the Ashe County Armed Forces Tribute. Additionally he was a docent at Holy Trinity Church in Glendale Springs, a member of the Episcopal Foundation in Asheville, and a volunteer at Mountain Hearts. He also served as a charter member and the senior-ranking officer of the New River Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.

Rear Admiral Sears was preceded in death by his father, Lt. Col. Redford D. Sears, USMC (Ret.)

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Sears, of Warrensville, N.C.; his mother, Margaret Sears, of West Jefferson, N.C.; his brother, John Sears and his wife, Gabriele, of Fleetwood, N.C.; his son, Paul Sears of San Diego, Calif.; and his daughter, Kathryn Lavigueur and her husband, Antoine, of Newport, R.I.; and five grandchildren, Tori and Zachary Sears of San Diego, Calif. and Beatrix, Billy, and Luc Lavigueur of Newport, R.I.

Rear Admiral Sears enjoyed sailing, reading, and the beauty that Ashe County offers, but above all, he enjoyed time spent with his children and grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the visitation from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at the Boone Family Funeral Home with a service at Holy Trinity Church in Glendale Springs, N.C. at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery will be at a later date.

Admiral Sears impressed upon me the value of my work and my service, both in uniform as well as in my civilian service within NAVSEA. And I enjoyed my time with him at NUWC, no small thing there. I still think of him often.

Barbara & Family,
As an impressionable plebe of '68 I was most fortunate to have been assigned a room, with 2 of my classmates, next to that of then 2/c Sears. We had some challenges with some of Scott's classmates however Scott and his roommate Dick Vidosic were great role models, very fair but consistenly stern and demanding upper classmen. Toward the end of the year and especailly throughout 3/c year we all became closer company and shipmates forever. What limited success this retired 06 experienced was in part attributable to RADM Scott Sears and his training of me.
Please accept my sincere condolences and know that I have prayed for Scott's soul and the well being of his family.

I have many fond memories of the Admiral, aboard the STIMSON during crew turnover, at CSS-17 riding the bus from Bangor out to Port Angeles to meet a submarine, and when he traveled all the way from Newport, RI to Bangor to speak at my retirment. Rest in peace Scott.

Admiral Sears was my first XO aboard the USS Henry L. Stimson. Then, LCDR Sears made a forever lasting impression on this, then, young 18 year old sailor. I will always remember him as a professional naval officer, who always had a moment for his men. Rest your oars Rear Admiral Scott Sears, job well done!

Admiral (Captian) Sears was great skipper but more then that, he was an all around good guy. One of the greatest memories of my Navel career was when Scott and my wife pinned my CPO anchors on my collar. Our most sincere condolences.

The family of Rear Admiral Scott L. Sears-

I offer my condolences on your loss. During the early 1980's when he was XO of the U.S.S. Henry L. Stimson, I was one of the Contractor Technicians on board. He always went out of his way to ensure that all was well. It was perhaps the best experiences of my life. May his soul experience fair winds and following seas, and may his soul rest in peace.

Barbara and family. I will always cherrish the sage mentoring that I received from Scott in the AN BSY-2 office and when he rode USS Alexandria. I appreciated his sincere dedication and commitment to his team and his job! Gail and I also appreciated the "wardroom team" that you and he established during your tour at PMS 418. Our thoughts and prayers are with you always.

I had the honor of serving under, then, Captain Sears on the USS Albuquerque. It was one of the best times out to sea with the best SpecOp commanders EVER! I can still remember him flying out of his stateroom, taking over the CONN and driving the Ship while in his infamous bathrobe! Then there's Barbara, who helped my young family get base housing and arrange for her to move in while we were out for 6 months. My family and I will NEVER forget you both!
Barbara, thank you for sharing Scott with us!
Scott, thank you for always reminding me what a REAL SUBMARINER really is!

Gloria and I will miss Scott very much. We remember well his quick wit and understated comments. We were just looking at a picture of him commanding the Sword Arch in our wedding 26 years ago when he smacked Gloria on the butt with his blade.

Barbara, we are so very sorry.

Barbara and the entire Sears Family,

You are in our prayers. Scott was a wonderful Classmate and Shipmate. He will never be forgotten by all of us who knew him. He and I once discussed the fact that at the end of the day its our morale influence on others that counted most. Scott's influence on literally thousands, including me, was the very best! Thanks Shipmate!

As a Submarine Officer and later as an Acquisition Professional I had the great fortune to interact with Admiral Sears on a number of occasions. My fondest memories are from his days as a Squadron 17 Deputy when he would "shadow" myself and other members of the Nuclear Propulsion Examination Board as we conducted examinations on one of "his boats". He was always professional while arguing for a higher grade for the crew, and we had some great conversations while agreeing to disagree at times. Most importantly, throughout the rest of my Naval Career Admiral Sears served as a great example and advisor. I offer my condolences to the Sears family.

Admiral Sears brought me up from Charleston SC to Newport RI and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center back in 1993. I'm still here at NUWC, so obviously that was the right move for me. Scott was one of the best bosses I've ever had, and it was indeed a privilege to work for him. My condolences to Barbara and the Sears family.

I was privileged to know and work for Scott at Raytheon in Keyport, WA. Scott cared about his people “out West” and I enjoyed a close working relationship with him bridging the miles between WA and RI. The sun always seemed to shine when Scott visited the normally cloudy, rainy Pacific NW. We had a photo of him at a company picnic. The day was mostly cloudy, but the photo shows Scott in bright sunlight. I think that photo captures the way we felt about him as our leader. My condolences to Barbara and Scott's family.
