Susan Sobieski Obituary

Ledyard - Susan (Assunta) Mary Spinnato Sobieski was born on April 20, 1917, in New London, just 49 days short of her 100th Birthday.

She was the daughter of Maria Dimarco Spinnato and Salvatore Spinnato. She passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, March 2, 2017, with her loving family at her side.

Susan married Joseph Sobieski on Feb. 18, 1943. She was the proud mother of three daughters, Joyce (Robert) Walker, Patricia (Ronald) Marcolini and Susan (Bob) Jewell. She loved her seven grandchildren, Joseph Walker, Michele Walker Young, Timothy, Traci and Rebecca Marcolini, Chris and Jacinta Jewell and Stacy Jewell. She also was blessed with four sweet great-grandchildren, Brielle and Eliana Jewell and Nicholas and Nadia Marcolini, who brought her abundant joy and happiness. She was the BEST Grandma and all her grandchildren put her on a pedestal of love and respect.

Susan was predeceased by her parents; loving husband, Joseph; and six siblings, Lena Sylvester, Michael Spinnato, Anna Swanson, John Spinnato, Lawrence Spinnato and Mary Chaney.

She grew up in New London and worked for many years as a seamstress for Hendels Mfg. Upon marrying Joseph, they made their home in Uncasville until five years ago when she moved to Ledyard to live with her daughter, Susan and her husband, Bob. Sewing, knitting and crocheting for her family brought her much joy, family was very important to her. She was a party girl and loved the many family parties and gatherings. Thirteen years ago, she traveled with her family to Tusa (Sicily) Italy to visit where her parents had immigrated from in 1916. It was a trip of her lifetime. She met her Sicilian family for the first time. She was greeted by many loving family members who treated her royally. She has always been our very special queen and she will be missed by many.

The funeral will assemble at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, at the Woyasz & Son Funeral Home, 11 Jerome Road, Uncasville, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m., at St. John Church. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home.
