William Briggs Obituary

Montville - William F. "Bill" Briggs Sr., 87, of Occum Lane, Uncasville, died on Monday, Nov. 27, 2017, at home after a 6 month battle with cancer.

Bill was born in Willimantic, Oct. 24, 1930, son of the late James and Agnes (Coughlin) Briggs. He attended Norwich Free Academy where he met Jeanette E. Grillo. They were married on Jan. 28, 1950; she predeceased him on July 11, 1993. On Aug. 26, 1994, Bill married the former Dorothy Wilczek in Christ Church in Norwich. She survives him.

Bill joined the U.S. Navy in January 1948, and served as an electronic specialist for 20 years, retiring in January 1968. He went on to own various businesses throughout his life, including Electronic Service in Uncasville, JRB T.V. in Lisbon, and Bill's TV in Oakdale. He also worked for Cuisinart in Norwich in the 1980's.

Bill resided on Cherry Lane in Montville for many years while raising his family, before moving to his present residence on Occum Lane in Uncasville with Dorothy. He was on many bowling and golfing leagues throughout his life, and was a life member of the Montville Polish Club and a member of the VFW.

In addition to his wife Dorothy, Bill is survived by his children and their spouses, Jim and Diana Briggs of Westville, N.J., Bill Briggs and Amaryllis Talavera-Briggs, M.D. of East Lyme, Joe and Marie Briggs of Oakdale, John D. Briggs Sr. of Norwich, Cathy and Tom Samokar of Plainfield, Bob Briggs and John Duval of New London, David and Lorrel Wilczek of Taftville, Lisa and George Carr of Norwich; son-in-law, Dennis Levander of Norwich; 25 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and first wife, Jeanette, he is predeceased by his sister Mary A. Briggs; two brothers, James R. Briggs and Robert E. Briggs; and stepdaughter Gail Levander.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30, at the Woyasz & Son Funeral Home, 11 Jerome Road, Uncasville. The funeral will assemble at 9:30 a.m. on Friday followed by a Funeral Mass at Christ Episcopal Church in Norwich. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Maplewood Cemetery in Norwich.
