Dow Lucurell Obituary

Dow Wilson Lucurell

Palm Springs - Born January 28, 1964, he passed away unexpectedly Thursday, July 19, 2018 in his sleep following a fall in his Magnolia home. He was the owner of UPTOWN ESPRESSO shops located throughout Seattle. Born in Seattle, Dow attended Queen Anne High School prior to its closing in 1981, then obtained his high school diploma from the University of Montana where he continued his college experience. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

Dow was the son of Lynn and Bob Lucurell and the brother of Drew Lucurell (Chris), all of Magnolia. He is also survived by his cousins Mike (Tevy) and Sean Dowling. An accomplished golfer, Dow played at Rainier Golf & Country Club in Seattle and O'Donnell Golf Club in Palm Springs where he was the club champion in 2009,2010 and 2011. Dow was a wonderful companion to a generous gathering of family, high school, college and business friends. He was a very humorous and giving person, a voracious reader and an avid traveler. He will be missed by his employees and all that knew his loyalty, sincerity and honesty.

Dow participated in several philanthropic organizations including many years as a Big Brother, but his great love was youth sports. He would have appreciated any remembrances be directed to his friend, Father Jose Milian of St. Anthony's Parrish, Holy Trinity Catholic School, 2315 N. Cedar St., Spokane, WA 99205-4333. Trinity School is building a new, much needed gymnasium to benefit grades K— 12 and Dow supported this endeavor and Fr. Jose's efforts to fund the project. At Dow's request, there will be no services.

Dow worked with me at the Magnolia Albertson's store. He started as our bag boy - and his charming way with each customer really made a huge difference.

We continued our separate ways, but would check-in now and again. I spent years working abroad, so would return and grab coffee at Uptown Espresso just to catch up on things with Dow.

We smoked some pretty fine cigars in our day and dreamed big dreams, and laughed loudly, heartily, deep to our cores.

I was reading about the Lower Q.A. location of Uptown Espresso closing and it made me think of Dow. Then I saw he had passed unexpectedly back in 2018. Sad to hear this news - we had many more stories and laughs to enjoy on this earth. But I know we'll have more of these when we meet up again in heaven.

All the best to all who loved Dow.

Dearest Lynn, Bob and Drew,
I just can't believe that I just came across Dow's obituary. I had no idea. Barbara Kirk has been communicating via Facebook but I haven't been very active lately. Dow will always have a tender spot in my heart. Such a naturally nice genuine guy reflecting the love that you all lavished on him. Be encouraged by 1st Thessalonians 4:13-18. Love Michele and Mijohni

I knew Dow as a customer of Uptown Espresso on Lower Queen Anne. With him at the helm, it has been my favorite coffee shop in the world. He always had a kind word and treated his customers like old friends. I was always impressed by how much he gave to the community. My condolences to his family and loved ones, he will be missed!

Some of my fondest childhood memories are playing with Drew and Dow, and the rest of our little Perkins Lane gang. The memories are flooding back. To Bob, Lynn and Drew - my heart is heavy with grief. I wish there was some way to ease your pain during this devastating time. We were lucky to have such a beautiful and free childhood.

Every time I was in Seattle, I'd go to Uptown Espresso hoping to run into Dow. He was elusive! (plus, best coffee in town)

RIP dearest Dow. Much love to YOU and your family. I hope Lobo gave you a big hug.

I was really looking forward to being in cahoots with Dow and and a couple of our friends for a project in Palm Springs. We would have rocked this place. He was sharp and on the edge, where he expected us to be.

Heartbroken is not even going to touch the depth of pain that is felt with your loss Dow. I hope that you had some idea of how deeply you were loved. I know that hearing the words made you uncomfortable but I, more than once, said them anyway. You played such a big part in so many of our lives. We may not have agreed on everything. I knew from our last encounter that you realized the bond of true caring and friendship never, EVER, fails. I would help you in any way I could simply because I loved you no matter what water may have flowed under the bridge.
I will miss you my kind, generous, stoic friend but I will not say goodbye because I know that we will see each other again.
Say hello to Hoops for me :)

Our family lived up the street from the Lucurells. My brother and I just spent a few minutes reminiscing about the times we shared with Dow and his brother Drew growing up in Magnolia. Those fond memories of him and his family will always be with us. We would like to share our condolences to the family.

i am heartbroken this afternoon as I have learned of the sudden untimely death of one of the best people I have ever had the chance to know. Dow Lucurell owned Uptown Espresso on Queen Anne as well as several other spots around Seattle.. I used to get my happy meal when I worked mornings at KJR...a triple espresso a large coffee and a cinnamon scone. That's were I met Dow. We always talked sports and as we got to know each other talked about life and the national condition. The guy was a great Sonics fan as well as a Seattle Reign and later Storm fan. I believe he used to scrimmage with the Storm. When i was let go from KJR, I used to sit for hours at Uptown working my cell phone and looking for what was next. Dow was always there to encourage me, to hand me coffee cards because he knew times were tight and to be a good friend. The Queen Anne Uptown was like a family and Dow was the poppa. Even though I haven't seen Dow for a few years his kindness, his friendship in a very tough time in my life and his letting me be a part of his circle of pallies while watching life go by sitting at a table at Uptown has never left me. Dow made me feel welcome and at home in Seattle. His death leaves a hole in the heart of everyone who knew him. My deepest condolences to his family.

I am so sad to hear the news of Dow's passing. I was lucky to know him growing up in Magnolia as his family was great friends with my best friends Family. I have a lot of childhood memories with Dow and his brother Drew , when I think of Dow there was always laughter and joy his eyes would open up wide with excitement for whatever the new adventure was . He always loved people and loved knowing what was going on he was interested in people genuinely . I had dinner with his family a few years ago we had not seen each other in many many years and it was so fun to catch up it was a dinner that I won't forget . My heart goes out to Lynn and Bob and Drew, I know how much he was loved by you all . Dow was someone who will be hard to forget, May all your memories of happy times put smiles on your faces and warm love in your heart . Thinking of you all at this difficult time. Heaven must be a wonderful place to take him so soon hopefully he's golfing his best game there smiling down on us all . Love and hugs to the Luc's! ❤
