Jan Hasman Obituary

The Heavens have a new star. On Friday, September 10, 2010 at dawn, Jan Francis Hasman made his transition. Never once did he complain during his six-month battle with lung cancer. With his wife, Sara and several family members lovingly at his side, he peacefully drew his last breath. Jan was a self-taught, well-known and respected musician for over 40 years. His incredible voice, tenor saxophone and piano will be greatly missed by his many fans. His love of music and words was only surpassed by his devotion to family and his many friends. Jan and Sara met while performing on stage in the fall of 1982 and were married December 11, 1983 at Morton's Botanical Gardens by Dr. Tom Costa of the Religious Science Church of the Desert. Dr. Costa later became their pastor and dear friend. Musician, poet and Real Estate Broker, his public faces but to his family and friends he was larger than life. We have so many wonderful memories. Thank you, God for giving us him for so many loving years. Jan is survived by his wife, Sara; his children, Lori Anne Hasman, Stillwater, Minn., Coco Jane Campbell, San Diego, Jason Christianson Hasman (Chantel), Middleton, Wis., Sara-Jan (Matthew) Selby, Los Angeles; grandchildren, Katie Renee Newham, Lola Josephanne Selby and Julian James Selby. Also, surviving are his mother, Anne K. Hasman and one brother, Joseph Hasman, both of Evanston, Ill.; niece Amy Morley; nephews, Joey and Jon Hasman. Services are at 3:00pm, Saturday, September 18, 2010 at Forest Lawn Chapel, Cathedral City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The American Cancer Society, The A.S.P.C.A. or The Barbara Sinatra Childrens Center.

IN January 2009 i began weekly piano lessons with Jan and continued through June. I treasure that hour when he came to the house, not only for what I learned from him, but getting to know him as a friend. I did not realize what was to happen a year later. Im a lucky man to have known Jan.

Dear Sara and family: I knew Jan since I was a child (I am Lynn's cousin "Mitzie" = actually Beverly). As a teenager he was such a dynamic musician and I have never forgotten him. He was always at the family Christmas parties with Joe and parents. I lost touch when I was in my 20's, but was happy to hear he had a great life. We will all see our family again, of that I am sure. Peace be with you. Beverly (Forbus) Stambaugh

Jan's family,

Knew "JC" way back in 1965-66 in Wisconsin when he played with The Ventrills.

From what we have read in this guestbook, JC never changed...just got better and better with age.

He was a rare musician of the 60's...kind, considerate, fun, loyal, and not the "usual" band guy.

We will never forget the night we became engaged and he dedicated "For Your Love I Would Do Anything" to us as we danced. He made our night special...a true celebration and brought those in the club into that celebration.

Bless his soul and we know we will be with him again in heaven and we know he will, as always, be singing.

Blessings to all.

Dear Sara, Family & Friends of Jan,

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. We knew Jan from his great talents, his service and love for others. Chuck worked with him cutting turkeys for Thanksgiving for the homeless. They had such fun while serving. We both danced to his fabulous music. He will be missed by so many but we know he is with our Lord.

Blessings of Love,

I have many memories of Jan all with him playing a different instrument. What a great guy taken away too early but we know where he is and will see him again and what a swinging time we will have then. God bless all the family and friends of Jan he was on of the good ones.

Dear Sara:

I pray you find comfort in God's love and the knowledge that,in time, the wound that you must be feeling in your soul will heal. I join the others in tribute to his musical talents but things I will miss the most are his sense of humor, his deep humility and the way he made everyone feel special. In the years that I knew him I never heard him speak an unkind word. I miss our silly verbal exchanges at the Thursday rehearsals. It was a blessing working with him. Though he has left us, his music will live on in his recordings.

Dear Sara,
I am still at a lose for words over Jan's passing. I really believed he would return to us at Innerfaith. I will truly miss him. Last week at the end of service I sang his song "I Am A Very Valuable Worthwhile Person Now" I wish him well on his way to his new adventure.

Dear Jan: We shared a lot of music here in the desert, and I am sure that you will be welcomed by the cats that are already up there and that the good souns and spiritual joywill go on forever. Peace.

Dear Sara and family and friends,
Jan was always the nicest musician in all the desert areas. Nobody was as giving, or void of selfishness, always fun
to be around.
Although he and I played the same instruments and had many musical similarities there was NEVER any competition among us. We always had a comradery, uncommon in these territorial greedy days.
His spirit and demeanor will not fade from those who knew him. He and Sara were some of the 1st people we met here and welcomed my wife and I, reenforcing the reason to relocate. I'll miss playing "fours" with him on our tenor saxes - or jamming - or taking turns singing and playing piano - but most of all, I'll miss his smile and his happy child-like eyes. Peace Brother,
Randy and Gerri Malcolm

Jan, you were a sweet man and we are honoured to have known you. So talented/loving. Am sure Blues and Yoda as I am sure there were there to meet U.
