Robert Kane Obituary

Robert (Bob) A. Kane, resident of The Fountains at the Carlotta, Palm Desert, Calif. left us on Tuesday evening, December 21, 2010 after bravely battling cancer for the past year. He was born October 11, 1918, in Chicago, Illinois, the oldest of two sons of Murray and Gertrude Kane. His smile, funny stories and devotion to his family and friends will be remembered and missed by all who loved him for years to come. A proud veteran of WWII, Bob served as a U.S. Marine in combat in the Pacific. After the war, Bob had a long and successful career as a fine Jeweler and for over 30 years was an executive with Laykin et Cie at I Magnin where he enjoyed and valued his relationships with his many loyal customers. He was a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America. Bob was passionate about his love for Tennis. He was an accomplished player in the Palm Springs area and loved playing the game for fun and in local tournaments. Bob cared about people and was active in local organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club and Braille Institute of the Desert. Bob amazed all who knew him by maintaining an active and independent lifestyle while living legally blind due to Macular Degeneration. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Dutch and the love of his life, Lenette to whom he was totally devoted and married to for 67 years. Sadly, left to mourn his passing is his daughter, Candy K. Weinper of Palm Springs; his son, Michael Kane and daughter-in-law Jeanie Kane of Los Gatos; his grandchildren, Jennifer Webb, Rachel Kane, Jonathan Kane, Justin Kane, Elizabeth (Emmons) Ortiz, Roberta Emmons and his great grandson, Maxmillian Cooley. He will also be greatly missed by his long-time friend and companion, Jill Grensbach of Palm Desert. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 10:00am at Wiefels & Son Funeral Home of Palm Springs, 690 South Vella Avenue, Palm Springs, CA 92662. A Celebration of Bob's Life will follow services for his family and close friends at The Fountains at the Carlotta in Palm Desert. Final resting place will be at Forest Lawn, Cathedral City, Sanctuary of Faith & Hope.

Learning of Bobs passing all of these years later is melancholy and sad; but remembering his humor, guidance and dedication lifts me up. Bob Kane was a focused and kind man who lived by a code of doing what was right. He loved his family and was proud of them, he loved his wife and was dedicated to her. He cared for his clients and was a loyal lieutenant to my Grandfather Sol Laykin at Laykin et Cie for decades. I personally learned so much from him and am grateful for that. I wish his children, grand children and great grandchildren all the best in their lives.....just as Bob would have wanted it.

Well Dad: I got a notice today that the guest book will remain online until Jan 13, 2013. I probably will not renew the showing of the guest book but rather, I will write to you in a journal that I can add to anytime I feel the need. I continue to need to your spirit to influence me and hope that Mom and You are at peace and most of all I pray I get to see you again in heaven. I love you always.....

Our last Father's Day together.......June 2010

November 9, 2012

Hi Daddy: its getting close to another Yarzeit for you...hard to imagine it has been almost two years. I think about you and mom so often and reflect on what a blessing it was to be so close to you both. I still need to believe that you are watching over me; guiding me; and helping me make good, solid choices as my life progresses. I still believe that I'll see you and mom again (along with Herb) and pray that until then you exist in peace and tranquility surrounded by love. You certainly are loved by me and Liz and Roberta ahead of many others as well. I love you. Candy

Since the online guestbook is still around and since you aren't: I figured I could at least acknowledge that today is Fathers Day and tell "you" what a great father you were. Most especially in the last 5 years of your life; we grew our friendship and created many wonderful moments I will always remember. RIP DAD.....

Hey Dad. I got a notice today that this guest book was about to be taken offline. I had the option to leave it for another year and so I am. No doubt I'm the only one who will view it or comment on it; but I wanted to leave it.
I miss you more than you can imagine. I know you watch over me (I have the quarters to prove it) and that makes me feel so good on days when I miss you. Love ckw

Dear Candy,
Thank you for calling and letting my mom and I know of your father's passing. We worked with Bob at Laykin et Cie for many years. He was a wonderful guy; so knowledgeable, so full of love for his family and what a sense of humor. Mom was so happy to have reconnected with Bob a few years ago and enjoyed their chats about "the old days". We will miss him dearly.

Candy, Elizabeth, and Roberta. I am so sorry to hear of your father and grandfather's illness and death. Even though I only knew him for a short time during his long life, I felt the love that you all had for each other. That love, along with the many stories and experiences will last in your heart for ever. I pray that he is now in heaven with Lenette, Kari and the rest of his family and friends. Emily and I wish you our sympathy.

Dear Candy,
Hector and I were very sorry to hear about your father’s battle with cancer and his passing away.
Even though we only met him a few times, his personality came through loud and clear as a very confident, independent, active, humorous and loving family man. I often heard Liz refer to him as “papa” reflecting her close and loving relationship with him. It is clear that all of us who knew him will miss him. We send our deepest sympathy to you and all your family.

From the 3rd verse of the Marine's Hymn:
"If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven's scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded

Bob, thanks for being a friend for the past 17 years. We had many battles on the tennis courts but always left in good spirits. Imagine how happy I was after moving to Texas to find you were continuing to use email. You were the master of one-liners! You had a way of cheering everyone up, especially when in your presence. Bob, you will always be one of my most admired friends, a model of how to live graciously.
