Robin Willner Obituary

Robin "Lefty" Willner passed away on Feb. 17, 2009 in Palm Springs, Calif. He was the first born to George and Tiba Willner on Nov. 23, 1927 in New York. After a move to Los Angeles as a young boy Lefty began a remarkable 67-year career/ love affair with the game of tennis. He played 4 years of college tennis and was #1 man at UCLA. Won the Pacific 8 singles and doubles in 1951. Played with Tilden, Budge, Vines, Perry, Riggs, Gonzales, and Ashe amongst many other greats. Played the circuit. Played Forest Hills. Was on U.S. National teams that played around the world. Won national titles. Has been a #1 nationally ranked senior player. Along the way he taught elementary school, college and received a PH.D from NYU in Human Development and Social Relations. Has taught tennis to countless. It is through tennis that so many have come to know Lefty but his interest and love of people expanded to all he met everywhere. Those who knew him were blessed to hear things "as they were" as much as they could hear. Were fortunate to be shown additional points of view beyond the two popular sides of an issue without demands to acquiesce. Lucky to experience the endless joy and humor that alit spontaneously in his company. Grateful to witness his gracefulness on (wow what beautiful strokes) and off the tennis court. For him tennis was more than a game but rather a conduit and metaphor to life. Lefty wondrously affected lives and opened hearts but would want you to know in his words and manner how equally he received back from being with you. The flow between student and teacher was always both ways for him. Ultimately the depth and character of this man goes far beyond words. Lefty is survived by his sister Ann Lieberman and by thousands he has so magically and beautifully touched here on earth. He is alive forever within us as we move on. The tennis/life lessons endure. You gave us so much. Thank you for everything Lefty. There will be a gathering of friends in memorial of Lefty on Tues., March 17, 2009 at Mission Hills Tennis Club in Rancho Mirage. Also, if you wish to share in Lefty's name, please contribute to the Lefty Willner Memorial Fund with Grassroots Junior Tennis (501c3) whose mission is to enable all kids to have the opportunity to learn the game with professional help: http://www.grassrootsjunior tennis.org/.

Our Family misses you. You were not only a GREAT tennis instructor to us but a valued friend. We loved our weekly lesson followed by dinner and amazing stories about your life. Right up to the end you called us each week to let us know wheather you could do a lesson or not. Even when you could hardly walk you continued to be a worthy and valuable instructor of your sport and true friend. I hope you enjoying a golden tennis court in the sky. Love You, thanks for all you gave our family, Shirley Wolfe
P.S thank you for waving your tennis racquet over our heads and telling us "you were now tennis players". one problem! you never released us to play with real people! ; ) OXOOX
(I think you did that to make sure we would continue taking lessons when you couldn't teach us any longer.) We will never forget you Robin Lefty Willner, Friend.

Warm Summer Sun

Warm summer sun,
Shine kindly here,
Warm southern wind,
Blow softly here.
Green sod above,
Lie light, lie light.
Good night, dear heart,
Good night, good night.
