Stephen Stephenson Obituary

January 28, 1941 – July 26, 2010

Stephen "Doc" Stephenson, M.D., 69, of Bryan passed away on Monday, July 26, 2010. A gathering of friends and family will be from 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday, August 14, at Hillier Funeral Home in the hospitality room.

Not one to dwell on sorrow, Doc asked to forgo a traditional memorial, and instead preferred to be remembered the same way he lived his life, with smiles, laughter and good friends.

Doc was born in Chickasha, Okla., to Fred and Ruth Stephenson and grew up with his sister Ann. He graduated from medical school at the University of Oklahoma and completed his residency while serving in the U.S. Navy. He married Ellen Kelley in Utah in 1974. After the birth of their son, Michael, in 1975, they moved to Dallas where their daughter Kelley was born in 1976. In 1979, the family moved to Bryan. Doc was one of the founding members of the Bryan Anesthesia Group and established the first free-standing surgical facility, the SurgiCenter, in the Brazos Valley.

Doc believed in living life to the fullest and seized every opportunity to do so. He enjoyed being outdoors and loved spending summer weekends at Lake Limestone with family and friends fishing, barbecuing, skiing, star gazing, even parasailing. For several years, he jumped with the local skydiving group, Ags Over Texas. At home, he always kept a huge garden and loved cooking.

He was the quintessential do-it-yourselfer, an avid reader and was a die-hard gadget geek. Most of all, Doc loved his old cars. He was happiest when he was buried up to the elbows in grease or off hunting for his next project car at swap meets around the country (making friends along the way).

After retiring from medicine in 1995, he fulfilled a lifelong dream and opened a small, gourmet restaurant called "Remedies" near Easterwood Airport in College Station. In 2006, he moved to Bandera, Texas, to enjoy the rest of his retirement in the Hill Country. Always eager to have new friends and new experiences, Doc was quickly embraced by the community in Bandera.

When blinded by a stroke in 2007, Doc moved back to Bryan to be near friends and family. After moving into Waldenbrooke Estates in Bryan, he continued to enjoy all that life could offer. He was an avid supporter of the local arts and particularly enjoyed the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra and listening to KAMU.

Donations may be made to KAMU or the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra in lieu of flowers.

Although we didn't know Steve when he married Ellen, the Kelley family in Michigan embraced him as a family member. We enjoyed his sense of humor, ability to relate to people, love for his children, affection for animals and antique Mustangs and sharing summer camp stories with his niece and nephew.Steve will be missed by our family and we always will remember his free spirit and concern for family members. My sincere condolences. May precious memories of Steve comfort you and bring you peace at this difficult time.

He was indeed such a fun person. We knew him through Remedies which we visited many times and so enjoyed his food. He was going to teach me how to fix one of his dishes, but we never got around to it. He worked with me to have retreats with my managers at his place and we enjoyed the good food he served us. I always enjoyed visiting with him and missed him after he moved away. Sorry I wasn't close enough to be able to visit with him when he returned. He was one of those folks that you really wish you could have spent lots of time with. While gone he is certainly not forgotten.

So sad to hear of Steve's passing. So many fun times at Lake Limestone. Steve use to scare me every time we took him up in the parasail. He would give me his glycerin (?) pill to put under his tongue "in case something happens." All the fun times helping out in the garage with the mustangs. And how many times did Drew organize his shop and tools to find so many of the same tools. If Steve couldn't find a tool in that mess, he would just buy another one. Cracked us up ?. Yes, the food at Remedies was wonderful. But Steve's stories and laughter were even better. He loved to cook and loved to share with family and friends. He will be really missed. God bless his family!

Steve was my brother-in-law and a very friendly, kind, outgoing person who immediately put me at ease when we first met. He was funny and always had good things to say about people. Steve made his mark on the world by being a caring, gentle man. He certainly will be missed by his children and his friends. My heartfelt condolences go out to them. Donna Kelley

My sympathy and condolences to the family. I visited his restaurant on several different occasions and I have to say it was the best food in the Brazos Valley. Doc kept everyone laughing the entire time with all his stories. It was my pleasure to have known him.

I'm very sad to hear that Steve passed on. My sympathy & condolences to his family: Ellen, Michael, & Kelly. Steve's love of life & energetic enthusiasm was pure joy & added much to our lives. Steve & I enjoyed many phone calls in this past 18 months, reconnecting after many years of losing touch. Steve & I shared a love of music, among other things, & I had recently mailed a CD he requested ("Hiawatha's Wedding",downloaded from the Internet) to Ellen for Steve. He called me at noon Saturday, July 24, to tell me how much he was enjoying the CD & asked for another by the same composer, which I was happy to find also. I was ready to copy the *.mp3 files to a CD when I heard from Ellen that Steve had passed away. I was deeply shocked. We will miss you, Steve.
