Elsie Schillig Obituary

Elsie Jo Schillig, 85, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on June 24, 2023, in her home following a short illness. A rosary will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 29, followed by a visitation until 6 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 30, at St. Jude Catholic Church. Elsie was born on March 2, 1938, in Cedar Rapids, and graduated from St. Patrick's High School, where she was a cheerleader and senior class president. She married her high school sweetheart, Chuck, and had two children, Micki and Mike. After her kids were born, she became a caring, stay-at-home mom and focused on raising her children. She always put them first, taking her kids to many tennis tournaments and instilling excellent values in them. Elsie liked cooking and spending quality time with her family â€"especially boating and water skiing with them. She also enjoyed playing tennis and card games with friends. She had a passion for gardening and took great pride in growing big, ripe tomatoes. Elsie loved going to daily Mass and was a charter member of St. Jude Catholic Church. She also gave of her time to assist needy kids at Christmas through Grateful Grannies and regularly volunteered to help out at the St. Jude Sweet Corn Festival. Elsie is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Chuck; their children, Micki (Dennis) Feldmann of Cedar Rapids; Mike (Gisela) Schillig of Tampa, Fla.; and grandson, Mac Feldmann. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Blanch and Harold Rajtora. In lieu of flowers, you can make a donation to St. Jude Church, Last Hope Animal Rescue or Hospice of Mercy in the name of Elsie Schillig. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses at the Hospice of Mercy who cared for Elsie at her home. Online condolences can be left at www.teahenfuneralhome.com.

Having been a classmate of Elsie since grade school at St. Patricks, Cedar Rapids, through to high school graduation, perhaps I have known Elsie longer than most folks around. Elsie has been one of my wife Erma's and my favorite people. Since we live in California we have seen Elsie at every class reunion and several times over the years, she always had that welcoming smile and warm personality. Although we will miss Elsie, we know that she is now with Jesus whom she had a close relationship through daily Mass. Chuck, Elsie was the perfect wife for you and we express our condolences to you and your family.

I remember Elsie fondly as a calm, gentle, caring person with a quick smile who could light up a room. She was a dear friend to my mother (Mae McGuire) and I always enjoyed her visits when I was young. Prayers for your family during this difficult time. Kathy (McGuire) Flores

Elsie was a bright light in this world, illuminating love everywhere she went. And I had the privilege of being loved by her. I will always remember her gentleness, kindness and warm smile, even her great sense of humor. She was beautiful inside and out. I will really miss her a lot. But the memories of her will be forever in my heart.

I now have an angel watching over me -- my mom. She was a terrific mother who, along with my father, really raised my sister and me very well and helped us to become the individuals we are today. Over the years, my mother definitely touched a lot of people’s hearts with her genuine kindness, warmth and fun sense of humor. I’ll never forget how bright and cheerful and positive my mom always was. She never complained, no matter how much pain or difficulties she faced. My mother and father set a perfect example for us through their amazing 64 years of marriage and I give my dad lots of credit for his endless love and personal care for my mom as her health deteriorated. Overall, my mother had a truly wonderful and blessed 85 years of life. I miss her cheery voice and great smile so much already, but I take real comfort in knowing that she is now with God in heaven.

I have so many wonderful memories, including our trips to the US Open in NY, USTA tennis meets, shopping "sprees", and every Saturday after tennis going to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts for a frozen mocha. I will miss her very much, may she rest in peace.
