Betsy Gauen Obituary

Betsy Clara Gauen (McGuire)
Betsy Gauen, mother of Curt & Tim, passed away on March 7 at 81. Betsy was born in June 1940 in Watauga, NC, daughter of Grady and Selma McGuire. She enjoyed a diverse professional career making many friends along the way, including as Office Manager for the Clerk of the Circuit Court in Will County and successfully managing D'Amico's Restaurant in Joliet. She enjoyed and was talented at many crafts including needlepoint, knitting and cooking, and volunteered with the Plainfield Band Boosters and local PTA. She could make a room laugh with her quick humor and had a funny comment for every occasion. Her greatest joy, however, involved her kids, grandkids, and a great-grandson. They share countless memories of fishing, swimming in Grandma's pool, playing cards, her pinball machine, planting flowers, and doing many arts and crafts. She was a shining light in their lives and will be missed dearly.
She is survived by two sons, Curt (Carolyn) of Indianapolis, Tim (Beth) of Lockport; grandchildren Katie Zuba (Billy) of Chicago, Karl Gauen (Abby) of Chicago; Kent Gauen of West Lafayette, IN, Kelcie O'Shea (Jimmy) of Santa Clara, CA, Nick Gauen of Warrenville, Brooke Hernandez (Thomas) and great-grandson Carter Hoffmann of Joliet, and; one sister Novella Tester (Jerry) of Mountain City, TN; brother Lowell McGuire of Dominica; Sisters-in-law Carra McGuire of Charleston, SC, Janice McGuire of Butler, TN, Linda McGuire of Mountain City, TN, Vicki Durham of Highland, IL, brother-in-law Pat Gauen of Rochester, MN as well as many much loved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Mary Katherine McGuire, and three brothers, Thomas, William, and Raymond McGuire. In lieu of flowers or donations, Mom wanted you to hug someone you love.

While I didn't know Betsy for long, she made an impact. She was funny, feisty and outspoken all traits I love. She was always warm and friendly to me and I miss talking to her. Rest In Peace!

To her family, I am so sorry for your loss. I met Betsy when she hired me at the Clerks Office when she was Assistant Circuit Clerk. I was fortunate to work with her until she retired. She was an amazing woman running that courthouse and never taking recognition for what we all knew. She was in charge! I remember outside of work I was fortunate enough to attend several dinners at Earls. Her sarcasm and wit were always on point, but what really stood out was her amazing heart! I felt I knew her family because she always had the best things to say about them all the time! Betsy helped me with my first resume to get out of the courthouse! I remember that blue Subaru she drove that she swore was good for 300k miles! I remember that if she had your back it was for good and that hug she gave you was priceless! She was often my go too for the best advice on life. I´ll never forget you!

Betsy you are my friend and it´s not goodbye, it´s, I´ll see you again.

While I only knew Betsy for a short time, she made an impact on me with her sense of humor and her outspokenness. She always asked Curt how I was doing and I´m told, called me her Noblesville friend. She cared and that meant something to me. She will be missed. God Bless.
