Jim taught me bodybuilding in the late 1960s. He was an amazing and inspirational coach as well as a fantastic and caring teacher. I will always remember his kindness to me.

At the age of 16 I meet Jimmy and we soon became best friends. Always knowing somehow when one needed the other and would just show up at each others doorstep. He was an important part of my life for 55 years. It is very difficult not being able to call you to tell you how I feel. I've loved you for 55 years JIM Arden. You are a part of my heart forever, til we meet again I love you.

As a high school boy over 50 years ago I was directed in Jim's direction by a friend who was in the process of forming a weight lifting team. When the team was formed I was lucky to be a part of it. Jim was the coach for the Westport YMCA at the time and was a caring man who decided to take a few high spirited young men under his wing.Through the weight lifting team I was able to channel my energy into something positive I could be proud of. Jim always set a good example and always found time for everyone. I will never forget the time he took me to the LimeRock races. He was a person who always saw the good in everyone,as he did in me. That positive drive was always reinforced by him. A caring and well rounded individual it was my honor to know him. He was not only my coach but my friend and I will miss him.

Fifty-five years ago I was a ragtag boy that had the good fortune to be befriended by Jim Arden, a unique man, knowledgeable and charismatic, who was both intellectually and physically gifted. Jim was a man for all seasons who inspired and saw potential in everyone he met, a person who could recite Shakespeare as easily as he could bench press 300 pounds. It was one of the great privileges of my life to have Jim as my mentor and friend: Jim who took me under his wing and in his typically unselfish way gave me a map and a compass that have guided me wherever I have travelled. Although our lives took us to different places and we lost contact, I have always kept, and will keep him in my heart. I remain in his debt.
