Thomas Hindle Obituary

Thomas F. Hindle
January 11, 1944 - October 31, 2021
Thomas F. Hindle, 77, lifelong resident of Westport, CT passed away peacefully with family on Sunday, October 31, 2021, after a several year battle with Parkinson's. He was the son of the late Edythe and Charles Hindle.
Tom was born January 11, 1944 at Langley Field, VA. As a young boy, his family settled in Westport, CT. He and his younger sister, Barbara, enjoyed a gentle and magical time growing up in Westport. Summers were spent going to Compo Beach to swim and to explore the two beach points looking for hidden starfish. In the winters, they went swimming at the "Y" and to skating and hot cocoa parties at the Patterson Club. At Staples High School, Tom was a charter member and president of the "The Orphenians," a select chorale group that continues to perform over fifty years later.
Tom graduated from The University of Connecticut with a business degree. While in school, Tom worked at the college radio station and fed his passion for music, editing, and broadcasting. After graduation, Tom began a long, successful career in video broadcasting technology. He began at CBS Labs where the process of overlaying text in broadcasting, Vidifont, was first being developed. Tom stayed with the same group through various corporate ownerships, including Philips, Thomson, and Grass Valley. As a Product Manager, he contributed to evolving technologies; one leading to the recognition of a Technical Emmy Award. Later in his career, Tom worked as a Senior Account Manager and owned large accounts such as NBC who used his company's equipment to bring the Olympics to living rooms around the world.
Water, boating, and swimming were passions of Tom's. As a long-time member of the Westport Y Master's Swim Team, he swam regularly and made lifelong friends with whom he traveled the country to compete. Tom's passion for music never waned. He enjoyed attending live performances including those presented by the Handel and Haydn Society. Tom also enjoyed rolling up his sleeves for home improvement projects and transformed his home over the years. He enjoyed sharing his home with friends, especially entertaining for the Super Bowl. Tom loved to travel. He crossed the country and the world, visiting family, sightseeing, and for business.
Tom was a caring family member and a person who worked to make and keep long time friendships. Survivors include one sister, Barbara Hindle; two nephews, Matthew Cohen and Darrel Kolb; and one niece, Star Kolb.
Friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a reception at Christ and Holy Trinity Church, 75 Church Lane, Westport, CT. Interment will be in Nichols Farm Burial Ground in Trumbull, CT. Condolences for the family may be left online at www.hardingfuneral.com. Contributions in memory of Thomas in lieu of flowers may be made to The Handel and Haydn Society, handelandhaydn.org or the YMCA of Wesport/Weston, westporty.org.

Tom was a wonderful guy, a true professional, and I´m lucky to have had the chance to know and work with him. I truly enjoyed our conversations over business lunches and marveled at his life story. A life well lived.

I am so sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I knew him first professionally, through the the several companies for which he worked (although they were kind of still the same company with different names). I also got to know Tom as a friend - we were both fans of top 40 radio and jingles (Tom worked at NBC radio and talked fondly of those times). He was always super focused on getting his customers what they needed and was a big part of my station's success. You'll be missed!

Tom was an amazing mentor while we worked together at Grassvalley. I'll always remember lunches together while working on site and great dinners at office Christmas parties. He will be missed.

What a loss for all who knew Tom.

I got to know Tom about 25+ years ago. We met at the annual Friday of Memorial Day weekend Martini Stand party in Rowayton. (yes, that's correct!) and shared a love of boating and Handel. Bill and I came to know his adored kitties, Princess and Fuzzy.
Tom would join Bill and I most Friday evenings for dinner, and often Sundays for dinner and the Patriots game.
Then... Bill and I decided to tour Scotland one fall. We invited Tom to join us -- he had 3 days to decide whether to come and he did!! Our tour was a week than Tom took off to visit family and close friends -- something he had wanted to do "forever" but now he could and did!!

I know how hard it was for Tom to move into assisted living at the start of Covid and been confined to his apartment. Bill and I moved to NC about the same time, otherwise I would have continued to expect Tom to join us for Friday dinners and Patriots game broadcasts

I am so grateful that Tom's nephew, Matt, and his cousin, Lynne, have been so attentive to Tom as his health declined and most especially in these final weeks.

The loss of a dear friend to many.

Tom was a true friend and colleague. I will treasure many shared times with Tom navigating the fascinating industry we chose to build our careers. He was one of the good people.
