August 27, 1931 - November 17, 2023
GRAND ISLAND - Edna Johanna Shelton, 92, of Grand Island passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her devoted family on Friday, November 17, 2023.
Celebration of life services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at All Faiths Funeral Home. Dan Naranjo will officiate. All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Edna was born on August 27, 1931 and baptized March 27, 1932 in St Libory, NE, the daughter of Archie and Anna (Ellerbrock) Heiberg. She grew up on the family farm in St Libory, later moving with family to Grand Island. She graduated at Grand Island Senior High with the class of 1949.
On November 1, 1950 she married James M. Shelton in Hastings. They remained married over sixty years until James passed away on March 8, 2011. They made their home in Grand Island and had five sons before having their sixth child, a daughter.
Edna was an exceptional cook, specializing in chocolate chip cookies, homemade bread, rhubarb and butterscotch pies, meatloaf, barbequed baby back spare ribs and lasagna to name a few. The kids loved to help her cook by licking the beaters and sampling during the process. Edna was also proficient with a sewing machine and was handy at darning socks, patching up a shirt or pair of pants that needed mending. Having a son in the Navy, she was also active in Navy Mothers. In addition, Edna loved being outside, tending her garden, doing yard work, and also enjoyed recreational pursuits such as water skiing--even though she couldn't swim- -driving the boat, cutting the rug with her husband, playing cards with friends and family, going on vacations while taking photos and documenting the events in albums.
In addition to her duties as a full-time mother attending to the needs of her six children, Edna held multiple jobs over the years, including lunchroom attendant at several elementary schools and housekeeping duties at Saint Francis hospital. She was known as grandma, gram and great, by the kids, but was so much more than that and was a major influence on their lives as well as the rest of the family. We all loved visiting her home and enjoying her company and spending time with her.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and the Quilters Group; she also crocheted. Edna enjoyed playing games of solitaire and word searches and looking through photos on Facebook. Edna was an avid sports fan, especially fond of Husker sports, the Boston Celtics, KC Royals and tennis.
Her memory is cherished by her children, Larry Shelton of Lake Havasu, AZ, Roger Shelton, Dennis Shelton, Steven Shelton all of Grand Island, Thomas Shelton of Omaha, and Teresa (Les) Hake of Grand Island; grandchildren, Angie (Don) Klostemeier, Shane (Ericka) Shelton, James (Rachel) Shelton, Nicholas (Ashley) Shelton, Brandon (Kathryn) Shelton, Alex (Iris) Shelton, Jenna (Shawn) Pichler, Tanner (Hannah) Pichler; great-grandchildren, Michael, Crystal, Tiffany, Tanner, James and Sarah, Opal, James, Liam, Eleanor, Jaida, Alaina, Knox, Tara and Eli; sister-in-law, Marie Lee; and numerous extended family and friends.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James, brother Art, sister Louise, and daughter-in-law Linda.
