Jack Nightingale Obituary

REV. JACK BURTON "BURT"
NIGHTINGALE, 59
Pastor

WEST PALM BEACH - Rev. Jack Burton "Burt" Nightingale, 59 years of age, went home to be with the Lord surrounded by his loving family and friends on Sunday, August 1, 2010, in West Palm Beach, FL. He left a wonderful legacy of love and generosity.
The love of his life was his wife, Teresa, who was his devoted friend, lover and co-laborer of 38 years. She also lovingly served as his caregiver over the past three years following his stroke.
He loved and treasured his daughter, Lisa Thomas and her husband, Dan, who was like a son to him. A true joy of his life was his grandson, Jack. Burt was Jack's "E. Poppa B" and their relationship was a unique gift and blessing from God.
Burt loved all of his family and treasured his Godly heritage. His brothers, George and Paul Nightingale shared a special relationship with him that few are privileged to know. He loved his sisters and brother-in law, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also shared a wonderful relationship with Teresa's stepmom, Alice Johnson, and his stepmother, E.J. Nightingale, and faithfully prayed for God's very best for all of his family and friends.
He loved and was loved by many friends. He was always there for them with a smile and a joke.
He loved the people of the churches he pastored at New Orange Baptist Church in Chipley, FL, First Baptist of Oregon, MO, Alturas Baptist Church in Alturas, FL, and Carter's Baptist Church in Lakeland, FL.
In 2003, he and Teresa moved to Chiang Rai, Thailand to love and serve the people of Thailand as missionaries with Shoulder to Shoulder Ministries, Inc. (S2S). He served faithfully along with his beloved co-workers for almost four years as they ministered to the Akha hill tribe people in the northern mountains of Thailand. Also, as a part of Burt's work with S2S, he provided food (both physical and spiritual) to those infected and affected with AIDS; as well as befriended people when and wherever he came into contact with them. His mission was for the wonderful people he met to meet the "One" who would provide the eternal "bread of life".
Burt loved cars, jokes, laughing, Chinese buffets, chicken wings, riding motorcycles, hunting, fishing, working in the yard, the "Orange Peel Gazette", studying God's Word and talking about his Lord. And, in Thailand, every meal he ate was "the best meal he'd ever had!"
Our precious Burt read, loved and trusted God's Word; and, now, according to the promises of the Bible and his faith in Jesus Christ, he is in the presence of his Savior.
Local arrangements will be through the Northwood Funeral Home in West Palm Beach, with the Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home in Winter Haven conducting the service. His funeral will be held on Thursday, August 5th, at Inwood Baptist Church, 1302 33rd Street NW, Winter Haven, FL, 33881. Two of his best friends, Rev. Hank Frisbie and Ray McConnell, Founder & President of S2S Ministries will officiate. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the church. The funeral will be held there as well, at 2:00 p.m., followed by interment at Glen-Abbey Memorial Gardens, 2200 K-Ville Avenue, Auburndale, FL 33823.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that contributions be made to Shoulder to Shoulder Ministries, Inc. for the continuation of the wonderful work being done there; and, mailed to 609 Chivas Court, Orange Park, FL 32073, in memory of Burt Nightingale.
Burt fought the good fight, he finished the course, and he kept the faith! HE WON!

Teresa, it's been way too many years, and I am so sorry this is my reason to come in contact with you. Burt was one of the sweetest, dearest, funniest, kindest souls I have ever had the privilege to know and call my friend, and what great work he accomplished here on this earth. I am so sorry for you, Lisa and the rest of your family. We can't know why the good Lord needed him now, but I know he's up there smiling down on us all, and I pray you find comfort in knowing he is now with Jesus. I love you and I'll always treasure the years we had together.

Teresa & Family,
I know your loss is great, but your love is greater. What you have shared with Burt over the years will never fade, it only gets sweeter. Burt was very special, as you all are. We all shared some great times together at Alturas, now we have Heaven to look forward to, Burt just beat us there! He always did like to win everything. I love you all!

Teresa, Lisa and family. I was lucky to have Burt as my pastor at Alturas Baptist and Teresa as my sunday school teacher as well as my friend. Burt was there during a trying time in my life always offering a prayer for peace and courage from Our Heavenly Father. Burt has made this a better place with his devotion to draw us closer in our walk with Our Lord. Teresa I can't imagine your pain from this loss but I pray for peace and strength that only Our Heavenly Father can provide during this time and days that lay ahead. The BEAUTIFUL words of his obituary was indeed a testement to what a Godly man Burt was.

Teresa and Lisa,
My love and prayers are with you and I cannot begin to tell you how much Burt meant to those of my family that had an opportunity to know him. To know him was to love him. What an example he was for the young ones, as well as us older folks. We can rejoice in knowing that he lived life to the fullest and was truly a light to the world. Love to you both, Judie Odum

Dear Nightingale Family...my name is Tony. I am a former resident of Lakeland and recently moved to the Clearwater area. I read the Ledger on line and just wanted you to know that as a follower of Jesus Christ, that "Burts" obituary was deeply inspiring to my faith. I know you are sorrowful and miss him but I also know that he awaits you in heaven. What a beautiful family and a wonderful man. God Bless you in your loss, but I celebrate his great and purposefull life. Respectfully.

I got to know Burt in High School. He was my brother Randy's best friend. Burt was at our house so much that Mom just got used to always setting a place for him at the dinner table. He had such a sense of humor and his stories would keep us in stitches while we ate. He was a wonderful friend to both my brother and myself. I have thought of him often over the years.
