Frances Metcalf Obituary

McAllen - Frances Vannoy Metcalf, 96, of San Antonio, Texas passed away on May 9 at the Army Residence Community of San Antonio. She was born in 1928 in McAllen, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents Allen Francis Vannoy and Kaleta Lyons Vannoy as well as siblings Thomas Vannoy and Marjorie Mueck. Mrs. Metcalf was a graduate of McAllen High School and the University of Texas at Austin. While attending the University she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.

She met her future husband, Col. E. A. (Art) Metcalf III, when both were serving as camp counselors in Wisconsin. They married in 1952, in McAllen, after his return from the Korean War. She spent the next twenty years as an "Army Wife" accompanying her husband on various duty assignments throughout the continental U.S. and Germany. She served as a Red Cross Volunteer at Fort Carson Colorado during the Vietnam War.

Upon her husband's retirement, they moved to her hometown. In McAllen, they pursued their love of travel, golf, and bridge. She served as an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of McAllen. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and the Pan American Round Tables of Texas where she was a Past State Director.

She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include daughter Julia Metcalf, son Edward (Anne) Metcalf and granddaughter Meredith Metcalf. Also survived by nieces Cheryl Mahoney and Tamara Vannoy-Tjepkema and nephew Van Mueck.

Memorials may be made to the scholarship funds of the P.E.O. Sisterhood or the Pan American Round Tables of Texas.

The interment service will be at 10:00 a.m. July 21, at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery, 2520 Inspiration Road, Mission, Texas.
