To Josie's Family and Loved Ones,
I am visiting from my home in Oregon, and I just heard the news today. I am deeply saddened that Josie's light has left us. Even though I hadn't seen or spoken with Josie in years, I always expected I would see her again on the softball field some day. I played ball with Josie long ago and counted her as a friend. I am not surprised to see all the wonderful tributes in this guestbook. My life was better for having known her, and I treasure many happy memories. My deepest condolences to all who loved her and were loved by her.

Coach Ayala was a wonderful coach, teacher, and mentor. I had the privilege of meeting her my freshman year, and kept in touch with her throughout my high school years. When I left sports I got very different comments from the different coaches, but her words were always very encouraging. She was very supportive, specially during my senior year, and she played a large role in allowing me to be where I am today. I was saddened to learn of her departure and even more because I would not be able to pay my respects in person. She will remain in my heart forever, and she will be greatly missed.

To the Ayala Family,
Where do I begin..... I was Josie's athlete at PSJA High School back in '92-96. The first time I met Coach Ayala was in the 8th grade, when her and Coach Billescas came over to Austin Middle School with some high school athletes to tell us about playing sports in high school. I remember her coming up to me and asking me why I was not going to play volleyball for them and my response to her was "I am a runner, I run track and cross country, and do the other sports just to stay in shape" her response to me was give us a chance and come out for volleyball. So I said yes. And I am so thankful I did. I got to share so many memories in high school with her.
I left to college to play on a volleyball scholarship and Josie and Cindy came to as many games as they could. During my college career I was able to become much better friends with Josie and as soon as I could I started working back at PSJA High with Josie as my mentor. We shared so many laughs, lunches, and just great times. Her smile always lit up a room, and she always came out of that room with a new friend.
I along with the rest of the Lady Bear Coaching Staff miss her dearly in our coaching office. It is hard to look across the room and not see her there. She was my hero, and my best friend. I love her dearly.
Jen, Natalie, Iris and myself did get to share her last night here together. We laughed and she beat me at darts. I will never forget your laugh or the was you just were so happy that night.
You will always be in my heart, and I will be seeing you soon.
I LOVE YOU ALWAYS!

To the Ayala family,
Being in the coaching circuit, I have known Josie for about 17 years but 3 years ago I returned to my almamater and had the pleasure of coaching with Josie. My first coaching assignment was to coach Cross-Country, Josie and I build a special bond that year. At that point in time, I realized what a wonderful, generous, genuine individual she was. She taught me the ropes at PSJA so unselfishly and always wanted the best for me, as her colleague. I will never forget how helpful she was to me, she spoiled me and our PE department! I and the staff miss her presence in our coaching office so much. The desk next to me can never be replaced by another individual as fine, humerous, competitive and motivating as her. We look forward to the day we will see each other again. Deb,Jen,Natalie and I
had the privilege of spending her last night with her and it was full of laughter and joy, what a beautiful smile you had that night. I will always cherish that night. I miss you buddy.

Coach Ayala was there for me when I really needed someone to listen, to notice that I wasn't ok. She helped me through that and she took notice when even I didn't know too well what was wrong. To go from seeing her everyday to knowing that she's passed fills my heart with a terrible feeling, but I know deep inside that she is in a better place now and her days on this earth were loved and cherished.

Josie was a lovable teacher to my daughter
when she was in high school. She was helpful and took good care of her.
Around three weeks before the accident,
I remember I was talking to her at the copy room. She was giving me words of confort when I shared with her my health problems. She told me to have faith in the Lord because he loves us very much and that he is always with us. That day, was the last hug we gave to each other as if was the last goodbye.

Josie, although I had not spoken to you in a long time, I live everyday teaching & coaching in the manner in which you taught me. You gave me alot of wonderful tips and great advice beyond the work place. I will forever be greatful, also for giving me the opportunity to work with you & along side you. Thank you, for everything.

I trully loved couch Ayala, her humor sence, her ability to listen to others when they have trobles, her teaches ways. but theres something i will always remember, she liked the song "Rayando el Sol" from Mana and I had the priviledge to play that song for her in one of her health classes.

May god give you peace and understanding of why she is gone, All I can think of is God needed an angel with a compasonate heart and a great big smile.

Josie was helping us during PSJA High School pre-registration, and I was taking pictures of the staff and students. I asked if I could take a picture of her, and she kept turning her head away. I asked, "Josie, what if all of you coaches get in the shot?" She reluctantly agreed and said, "What if I don't like it?" I answered, "Well, I'll delete it, OK?" Of course the pictures were not deleted. Here she is with Coach Iris Garza and Coach Roy Garcia II. Then at the end of the day I snapped a final picture of her. She looked tired and sleepy - but she was still a trooper! Never leaving until the very end!
We have many happy memories of Josie. There are so many people who have worked and have had the honor of passing through the doors of PSJA High School. Some years ago, we welcomed Peter Trevino to our staff. We had planned to give him a gift basket at our Open House. I had purchased a lot of expensive pens and school supplies to raffle off to one lucky teacher. Well Josie saw the basket and fell in love with the supplies and really wanted to win. She kept telling me, "I want those pens." I told her, "Well maybe you'll win, Josie." "But I really want those pens!" she kept saying. I finally relented responding, "Okay Josie. You're going to win, OK?...Get it???...Just go over there and sit down and don't act all obvious!" So when the time for the drawing came, I miraculously picked out her name "JOSIE AYALA!!!" She came strolling up to get the basket! She was acting all happy. Then we noticed that during the whole time we were planning the coup, her nephew JJ Ayala had been watching us! He began accusing us of cheating...That is one of my favorite memories of her and making her happy was all that mattered!
This past summer, I decided to take the class pictures that I had in my office and place them in a prominent place located behind our main administrative area here at school. I stenciled the phrase "Once a Bear, Always a Bear!" Josie walked in and saw me on the ladder and asked, "What are you doing now?" I told her what I planned to do. She said, "That's great!" The next day she came back and noticed a black and white picture of 1974 Graduates of PSJA High School that I had hung on the mural. She kept staring at all the faces on the picture. I jokingly said, "Hey! That's one of the few black and whites that we still have here!" She started laughing and called me over. She said, "Come over here. Do you know who this is?" I stared at the face in the picture, and we both started laughing! "Josie is that you?" She answered, "Yes, but you better not say anything!" I told her I was going to blow up her face and show it to the whole staff with the phrase "Where's Waldo?" She said, "You better not!" I then went to my office and about 1 hour later came back down. I see Josie walking with her picture to show her friend and our colleague Rosie Diaz. I told her, "Josie! What are you doing? You better put that picture back!" She laughs and says, "I was just showing her my class!" We all started laughing....
TAKS testing is always so stressful for everyone. That's why one year Cindy Billescas and I decided to have Josie help us with teacher assignments. We warned her telling her, "OK Josie, everyone mysteriously gets sick the day before the test and are unable to come to work! Your main duty will be to replace test administrators if we have to!" Man! Josie was the best teacher assigner! She was able to pull teachers out of hats and replace them! Cindy and I were all impressed! She sat there in front of Cindy's computer screen and created testing magic! We told her, "Josie! You need to get your masters and become an administrator!" She said, "No." She was always so humble... So I know where you are now Josie! So I'm going to ask you for a big favor! Please, please tell GOD to remember us during this TAKS testing administration! We love you and will always remember you and the memories that you have given so many of us!

One too many times you taught me a lesson.
Always smiling joking around loving us as your own.Always there every morning as we prepared to run out and strengthen ourselves.Getting the best of us in every stride.
You were there for me when i went through a hard time and gave me advice.
2 years of unforgetable memories i will hold forever.

Your words guided us through the right,
Making you a star shining so bright.
Never showing sadness, yet a smile,
Pushing us hard as we ran that mile.
Your motivation was beyond the best,
Making you someone unique from the rest.
Your words of wisdom have helped us all along,
Showing us life’s tough, and you have to be strong.
You fought till’ the end…yet didn’t survive,
But no matter what your memory will forever be alive.
your in a better placee, and from now and on youll be forever in my heart.

I never got to know Coach Josie Ayala, her name was familiar to me and at some time I may have seen her around in school, but I never got to share something so big with her as all those who now grieve over her death. However, the difference she's made in other
people's lives and everything she's done to help others has touched my heart. Now she watches over each and every one of who she left on earth to finish what she started. Your memory will forever lie here in the grounds of PSJA High school and live in the hearts of the entire student body. My thoughts and prayers go to her family and everybody who loved her. Josie and I were best friends growing up. We hung out at your grandmother's house across from the recreation center in Pharr. Of course during the years, we parted and went our separate ways until in the mid 90s, we ran into each other at the bowling alley. It seemed like we had just seen each other yesterday. Josie and I were best friends again reminiscing and enjoying bowling. Josie has left an empty space in my heart, but the joy, admiration and respect I have for her will always be with me. Josie, you will be missed more than you will ever know by many, many people!! You are now in peace. I hope that the Ayala family will also find peace in such a great loss. The family has my deepest condolensces and respect. May God bless them!!

If you ever need to talk to her just go into the room next door where she would be with arms wide open listening to what you have to say. Be strong for the kids and just take it one day at a time. I will always be here for all of you in your times of need. I love you girls...and please be strong...

To the family and the PSJA community ref: Josie Ayala, my deepest condolences in the lost of a great educator and loving person. The heart and soul of PSJA feels like it's completely torn. But in the mist of pain, comes the comfort that we all had the opportunity to have been touched by her loving ways.

To the family of Josie Ayala, my heart goes out to you. I pray that you will find comfort while reading the many ways Josie had an impact on everyone who knew her. I played softball with Josie for many years, and she was always someone people could lean on. She always had a smile on her face, worked hard at what she did, and always had a way of cheering me on. I did not work with her, but i did see her at softball tourn. with her team, and she would always say,"Here I am, doing what I love." Softball was in her heart and I truly believe her athletes knew that. I will miss seeing her bright smile. Josie, I know you will still be looking over your teams from Heaven! May God Bless you.

Coach Ayala was more than a tremendous teacher, she was a great individual with an even greater view of life. "if you reach just one invividual, you have made a difference" was one of the many words shared by coach when i first had the priveledge to knowing her during her Valley View days. She will never be forgotten and PSJA has lost an incredible person. You will always be in our thoughts.....

My deepest thoughts and condolences to the family. I remember Josie when we were still in school at PSJA. She was 3 yrs younger. I remember how athletic she was and such a nice/giving person. She will be greatly missed by everyone. Unforeseen occurances befall everyone. I pray to God in heaven that you will have the peace knowing that she is resting only till the resurrection. Jesus promised that all those in the memorial tombs would listen to his voice and come out once again. What a marvelous hope for our future. God bless you all.
