Shirley was such a wonderful person who touched so many lives in such a positive way. She especially inspired young people with a love of music and performing. I always remember her kindness, pleasant smile and courage. Rise is a shinning example of her influence on youth. I would like to have Rise's mailing address if possible. Rise, I am deeply saddened to learn of Shirley's passing, she will be deeply missed. Please accept my most sincere condolences and know that my heart and prayers are with you and your family during this time. As a child, I had the pleasuring of learning from Shirley back during the Tower Theater's production of The Wizard of Oz, many years ago. While Weslaco lost an icon, it gained a legacy. Ms. Atkins will live on through the voices and the eyes of her students and audiences. My family has been doubly blessed by her teachings, she was my 2nd grade music teacher then became my daughters' first music instructor (all 3 of them.) Two of them continue to participate at Weslaco's Tower Theater where you can still feel her presence. We are forever grateful for her gift she shared with all. God Bless.
Our condolences to the Morris Family.

I remember having "Miss Davies" in Elementary School Music class, and it was so meaningful to me when she put together a sextet of girls and a small group of boys and girls to sing for our sixth grade graduation. My Mom said she really enjoyed the Tower plays, too. She seemed to touch many lives and brought lots of joy to many people throughout her the career!

What an amazing woman! As I told her many times, the enjoyment I felt when attending her music classes at Stephen F. Austin in Weslaco, was the reason why I became a music teacher. She ignited a love of music and the arts that will not be extinguished. I loved her smile and the twinkle in her eye. When Rise was born, my mom and I would babysit. She was a special lady...to SO many. Rest in peace, Shirley. I know you are ready to start rehearsing the heavenly choir! God bless.

This lady will always hold a special place in my heart! She is the reason I became a music teacher:). I thought of her often as I taught children the way she taught me...to "love" music. She made a lasting impression on my life, for which I will always be grateful. Thank you for sharing your gift with so many!

"Miss Davies" gave me my first exposure to opera when I was in elementary school in Weslaco. We went to an afternoon dress rehearsal in McAllen. Shirley was singing in this production and I remember being excited that I knew a star! Even now I can hear her beautiful voice. God bless her family.

Spent a lot of time with her over the years as our ailing animals spent time in the hospital together. She was a really nice person. I enjoyed talking with her and getting to know her pets. I will never forget "ruby slippers". Her pets always had great names and never wanted for love. May she rest in peace.

Shirley and I went to PSJA at the same time and sang in the Choir and were very good friends. Then when I married and moved to Weslaco, Texas and took my first child to Steven F.Austin Elementry,,,,there she was teaching music. I had Bonnie, Kent, and Mark Solether all in her choir. They loved "her" and Bonnie became a Music Teacher, and Kent became a song writer and entertainer ALL because of what she taught them of the LOVE for music..Mark was in the Band and has always loved Music. Rise, I think you will remember us, and we will never forget you.Love Deanie "Moseley" Solether and Bonnie, Jon "Kent" and Mark Solether. Our Prayer's are with you.

Our condolences to Rise, Marty and Michael. Our family has wonderful memories of rehearsals and performances at the Tower Theatre, which helped each of our four children grow in confidence and find their unique voice. Shirley was a big part of that! She was a woman of vision who saw the creative spark in the young people she taught for so much of her life. She made a profound difference in our community. We will miss her.
