William Maher Obituary

William Joseph Maher, age 78, most recently from Comstock Park, MI, passed away on July 12, 2021, after a recent cancer diagnosis. His greatest enjoyment came from creating opportunities and participating in family togetherness. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Jean (Witte) Maher, and his sister Marianne (Maher) McDonald; he is survived by his daughters Kelly (Sean) Berrie of Berlin, MD, Carrie (Quinn) VandenBerg of White Cloud, MI, and Shannon (Andy) Jansma of Sparta, MI and his grandchildren, Caela, Emma, and Lexi Berrie, Parker & Lily VandenBerg and Sawyer and Max Jansma. Additionally, he is survived by his sister's children Michael (Mary) McDonald, William (Lisa) McDonald, Patricia (Robert) Torr, Colleen (Thomas) Mulroy, and six Maher grand nieces and nephews. He joined the Witte clan when he married Mary Jean Witte on June 15, 1968, and was welcomed as one of their own. He enjoyed a special relationship with his six brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law and remained close with them and the 25 Witte nieces and nephews and 22 grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Bill was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 7, 1943, to the late Leo T. (Skip) and Helen Maher, he graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School, where he was a member of the '61 State Championship basketball team and a member of the DCCHS Sports Hall of Fame. He graduated from Central Michigan University, where he met his wife, Mary Jean, and several lifelong friends. Bill was a teacher in Flint, MI for three years before returning to Central Michigan to earn his MBA. He then worked for Robinson's Industries and Delta College before returning to Central Michigan University, retiring from there as the Executive Director of National Programs Emeritus in 1999 after 23 years. Even after retirement, he continued to advocate for higher learning, as his nieces, nephews, and grandchildren will attest. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending his time with family and friends at the cottage in Fremont, his condo in Comstock Park, and 16 sun-soaked winters in Lake Havasu, AZ. He especially enjoyed attending the grandkids' and grand nieces' and nephews' athletic events in person and online. He and Mary Jean raised their family in Coleman, MI, where he lived for over 40 years. He was a devoted Catholic and a longtime member of Saint Phillip Neri in Coleman, where he was an active member, including co-chair of the building expansion; he was a seasonal parishioner at All Saints Catholic Church in Fremont, MI for 35 years, and most recently a member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Belmont, MI. He had an inquisitive nature that drew him into perpetual learning about world and community events, sports, finance, and most passionately, the interests and lives of his loved ones. Right up to the end, he continued his futile support of Detroit professional sports teams. During his days in hospice care, he was humbled and thankful for all the calls, notes, letters, and visits…. As well as the M&Ms, cookies and various chocolate treats that made up his fifth and favorite food group. Bill Maher was a great combination of brains, passion and heart. I first met him as a teenager and he grew to be a great friend to our family. He'll be missed by all who knew him.

My heart is aching and I am so sorry for your loss. I was a colleague and more importantly a friend during the entire time he was at CMU. He was so professional and such a bright light in so many lives. We talked two or three times a year and laughed about our times in the office. I spoke in length to him in January about my cancer treatments and his family and mine. He loved all of you so much and his voice would sparkle whenever he mentioned your names. I thought about him a few weeks back and tried to call, but the phone was either disconnected or out of order. I regret not hearing his voice for one last time. He leaves such a huge void in so many lives. Due to health issues, I am unable to attend his service, but I will be thinking of him and all of you and sending love and hugs.

We know this is a difficult time for you. We too share your sorrow for the loss of your father. I have been Bill's friend since grade school. In addition to getting a great education at Catholic Central we enjoyed our time together playing sports. Bill starred at basketball while I favored baseball.
Life took us in different directions during our working years but we were able to reconnect in retirement. Bill spent much of his winters with us in Arizona. Our conversations regularly involved our families. He was soo proud of you girls. We both retired early and he always said he was thankful to have that time to enjoy life and family.
We will miss Bill but know he had a wonderful life and is now reunited with your mother the love of his life.

We met Bill about 26 years ago when we moved to Michigan. He and Mary Jean always welcomed us at any event with other friends, family, and extended family. This is such a great group of people! From weddings and birthday parties, to holidays and happy hours - you all know how to have FUN! We cherish the friendships and all that we have shared over the years. We will miss Bill and all of his stories, humor, and advice. While we’re happy that Bill is now at peace and with Mary Jean, saying goodbye is still hard. We continue to pray for God’s comfort for everyone who misses him. - Love, Kelly & Ed

To the Maher Daughters and Families,
So sorry for the loss of your father and grandfather. He was a wonderful man; very pleasant, and very easy to work with. I worked with your father in the Saginaw CMU Extension Office for several years. We would share talks about our daughters, of which I had two.
I know he will be deeply missed, but cherished in your hearts for ever. Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time. God Blessings and Peace.

Kelly, Carrie & Shannon,
You're family to our's - you're like my own daughters - and your dad was a lifelong close friend and "brother". From CMU, Flint, Coleman, the "Cottage," Comstock Park, and of course, the years spent here in Lake Havasu, AZ, we have shared so many memories. Your dad, your mom, and each of you, have been so much a part of my life - and the Wittes were so good to me. I love you, l love your family and extended - and I can't imagine the depth of your loss. Bill was funny, personable, financially precise, loving, sharing, thoughtful and so much fun! I could go on and on, but each of you know how important your dad and your family are to me. I wish that I could be with you on Friday, but it just didn't work out. Thanks for always being there for me and my girls. Your dad was ready to leave, see your mom, and play cards or pool with Jim. May they all rest in loving peace. Love and deepest sympathy.

Bill and my dad have been friends since they met at Central. Bill, Mary Jean, my dad and mom became fast and lifelong friends. Before our family relocated to AZ we had many wonderful memories with them and the girls. We would stay with them when we’d visit MI and they came on many occasions to see us in AZ. And when Bill got the Havasu place we all visited whenever we could.
Bill was such a loving and funny guy, like another dad. I will never forget his infectious laugh.
When my dad remarried - he did so with Bill by his side (and at Bill & Mary Jean’s cottage, no less) and when my dad passed away, Bill fought time and Mother Nature to be at his service. We can never express how much that meant to us or how much Bill (and the whole family) has meant to us over the years/decades.
Our deepest sympathies are with Kelly, Carrie and Shannon and their families. We love you all.

Kelly, Carrie, Shannon and families.......there aren't enough words to express my condolences and love for you all. You know your dad was a second dad to Allison and me, and I love and miss him terribly. I'm happy that he's back with Mary Jean and my dad again; I hope they're all playing cards and laughing late into the nights like "the olden days." Love and hugs to all of you and your families...
