M. Dixon Obituary

M. S. "Sonny" Dixon, Jr.

A memorial service celebrating the life of M. S. "Sonny" Dixon, Jr., 88, will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at First Baptist Church, West Monroe.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time at the church.

Sonny went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 28, 2011, at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Monroe on May 22, 1923 and spent his early life in Sterlington on the family farm. Sonny attended local schools and went to Georgia Tech until World War II brought him home. He attended LSU after the war where he met and married his beloved Jean. He graduated from LSU and bled purple and gold for the rest of his life. After graduation he and Jean moved to Sterlington where they lived for 15 years before moving to Monroe.

Sonny was an avid outdoorsman and spent much of his free time duck hunting or fishing. After retirement he fished almost every day and enjoyed teaching the techniques of the sport to his grandsons. He became a devout member of the First Baptist Church, West Monroe where he sat in the same seat every Sunday. Sonny loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and they provided him much joy in his last years.

Sonny is survived by his wife, Jean Junot Dixon; and his children, Linda and husband Ronnie Berkemeyer, Jean Ann and husband Allen Taylor, Junot and wife Lisa Dixon, and Cathi and husband Ross Thompson. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kristian Taylor Quinn and husband Michael, Corey Taylor and wife DeAnn, Kati Taylor Hennessey and husband Paul, Michael Hart and wife Megan, Molly Hart Keene and husband Steve, Amanda Thompson Debnam and husband Matthew, Sarah Thompson and fianc? Mitchell Nerren, Jordan Haddad and Stuart Haddad; nine great-grandchildren, Dylan, Taylor, and Hunter Quinn, Marley Ann Taylor, Kountry and Caden Hennessey, Evangeline Hart, and Oliver and Mirabelle Keene; and sister, Mary Ann Johnston.

The family would especially like to thank his caregivers who became part of his family: Tracy Juneau, Randy Bonnett (his "Man"), Betty Hubbard, Brenda English, and Ramona Moore. These were all "Guardian Angels" in his life. They would also like to thank Best Home Health, and Shannon Newton and the staff of St. Joseph Hospice.

Sonny donated his body to LSU School of Medicine in hopes that it will provide answers for others.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Baptist Church, West Monroe; Med Camps of Louisiana, or a charity of your choice.
