Kevin Ward Jr. Obituary
In a statement released by spokesman Mike Arning, Stewart says "my thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and everyone affected by this tragedy."
The three-time NASCAR champion struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. with his car on Saturday night as Ward walked toward it following contact between the two during their race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.
The full text of the statement read: "There aren't words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr. It's a very emotional time for all involved, and it is the reason I've decided not to participate in today's race at Watkins Glen. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and everyone affected by this tragedy."
Stewart's team had said earlier Sunday that Stewart would be behind the wheel of his No. 14 Chevrolet when the green flag waved. Regan Smith drove Stewart's car instead.

Our family, like yours, was tasked with living our lives after my brother was taken from us at the age of 18; that was in 1971. Many years have passed, but he lives on in our hearts. When the difficult days become more bearable, open your hearts and you will feel Kevin because love never dies. My heart seriously BREAKS for this family & everyone who had the pleasure of knowing this man. Gone WAY too soon. I can't even begin to imagine how they feel or how they're even coping with this right now if MY heart is breaking this bad & I hadn't even heard of him until this accident. They lost a son, a brother, a friend, a boyfriend.. It's just not fair.

To Mr. Ward's family, friends, and loved ones, but above all his parents and siblings (if any)--
I am a total stranger, but I just read about the loss of your son, and wanted to pay my respects.
I read a couple of articles that spoke of the character of your son, Kevin. I didn't know him, but what was said of him, that I read, made me think highly of him, and of your raising of him. His character to his fellow racers, his dedication, devotion, and hard work in someone so young, makes me think that he was a shining example of youth that are positive and a good thing for our future.
I can NOT know what you're going through right now, or what you will go through as time goes by, but I just wanted to, as a stranger to your family and to your son, complement you on what a fine young man he appeared to be.
A hard worker, and to be able to drive, and to be so brave and tough to drive in his sport (I used to be a fan of professional racing when I was younger, and I KNOW from watching those races what skill it takes to do what your son did in his sport. To have the brains to think fast, efficiently, and under pressure, and with SKILL, speed, and precision--that is what is so amazing to me—it just reminds me of the Marine Corps. motto—improvise, adapt, overcome.
In the Marines, like in racing, like in other sports, like in life, you have situations in which God forces you to “improvise, adapt, and overcome,” so to speak. I have NEVER been a Marine. I have never been a race car driver, like your beautiful and handsome son, Kevin Jr. I have never been mother. And I have NEVER had to deal with nor experience the pain associated with the nightmare of losing a younger loved one. I can NOT feel what you're feeling—nor do I EVER want to have to. But I, along with so many countless, nameless, and faceless others, whose voices, prayers, sympathy, and ANGER you all may NEVER hear, CAN just leave a note here to say—I'm sorry for your pain, for your grief, and for your heartache.
I will pray to God for you all's comfort. I don't know when on Earth it will come, but I believe the book of the Gospel According to Matthew that quotes God's Son as saying this: “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” Those words wouldn't do much for me, if I were in your situation—I don't think—but the subsequent fulfilling of that promise—made by the Son of the living God—would. That is my hope for you all right now, and in your future. The sheer memories of the good times and blessings you experienced with your beloved and the many memories and good times you'll probably be blessed by others with, as they recollect on the things that stick out most for them about your son—the fun times, and the silly times, and the times that he helped them in word, in deed, or both, will hopefully bring a needed smile, laugh, or other temporary break-from-grief for you, his beloved, in your time of sorrow.
Again, I am sorry for your loss. Jesus was not a liar. He will comfort you, and therefore, even in your mourning, you are blessed. Until you receive your comfort, and in times when you are sad—know this—that you have—in raising such a fine young man to have been spoken so well of by his peers—have contributed a LOT more to this world than MOST people have—including myself.
