Robert Lane Obituary
Robert "Hal" Lane, 84, of Columbia City, passed away at 5:17 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015 at Parkview Whitley Hospital in Columbia City. Born July 25, 1930 in Tipton, he was the son of Porter and Rose (Jobin) Lane.
Hal graduated from Tipton High School with the Class of 1948 and attended Purdue University before being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Following the war, he married Rachel Kleyla on Feb. 27, 1952 at West Street Christian Church in Tipton. Hal eventually received his bachelor's degree from the Purdue School of Pharmacy in 1955. He had been a pharmacist in Elwood and Tam's Drug Store in Marion before moving to Columbia City in 1966. For over 33 years, he was the Director of Pharmacy at Whitley County Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1999. He then opened up Gotcha-Covered II with his son, Mike. Besides being a pharmacist, he operated About You Books.
Hal was a past president of the Columbia City Rotary Club and had been a member of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists. He was a very hard-working man who never missed a day of work. He loved big band music and had his own band in college, "Hal Lane's Orchestra." He also had a passion for radio-controlled airplanes, model railroads and the 1893 Columbian Exposition, a.k.a. The Worlds Fair.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Rachel Lane; sons, Brian Lane, of Fort Wayne, Dave (Kim Weaver) Lane, of Fort Wayne, Mike (Jill) Lane, of Columbia City and Mark (Mandy) Lane, of Osceola; brothers, Joe (Dorothy) Lane, of Helotes, Texas and John Lane, of Tipton; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant granddaughter, Emily Brianne Lane.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015 from 2 to 6 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 2015 at the funeral home with Pastor Larry Sheets officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in Hal's memory to Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana.
