David Gibson Obituary

BRYSON CITY - David Benjamin Gibson Sr., 89, lovingly known as Benny, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home Thursday, July 10, 2025, and was welcomed into the kingdom of Heaven. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, pastor and friend whose kindness and faith touched countless lives.
Benny is survived by his beloved wife, of 62 years, Joyce Waldroup Gibson; children, David (Sundi) Gibson of Almond, Danny Gibson and Mark Gibson of Palm Springs, California, Darren (Mellie) Gibson of Bryson City and Kim (Buff) Gibson of Cherokee; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin T. Gibson and Sarrah Holden Gibson; two brothers; one sister; one nephew; and cherished great-grandsons, Stetson and Gabriel.
A man of deep faith, Benny served as a Baptist pastor for many years, leading several churches throughout Swain County. He was a long-time member of Silvermine Missionary Baptist Church, where his presence and leadership were a blessing to many.
Benny began his working life in the trucking industry, hauling furniture and soft drinks. He later became co-owner and operator of the Topton Convenience Store before finishing his career with the State of North Carolina, where he worked until his retirement. After retirement, he worked at Crisp Funeral Home for a number of years.
Known for his warm smile, generous spirit and ever-present offering of candy, Benny never met a stranger. He had a gift for making everyone feel like family and was always ready with a kind word and a helping hand. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers, honoring the man who meant so much to them and so many others.
Benny's life was a testament to love, faith and service. We are all better for having known him and he will be deeply missed by his family, friends and the community he served so faithfully.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 15, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. Eddie Taylor and Danny Shuler officiated. Burial followed in the Euchella Cemetery. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.
