MURPHYSBORO - Larry Gene Hornick, 86, of Murphysboro died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2025, in Carbondale.
Larry was born in Carbondale on Sept. 10, 1938, to He spent his childhood in and around Carbondale until he met and married the love of his life, Dona Lee Henry, on Nov. 1, 1958.
He made Murphysboro, his home, where he raised his family and spent the majority of his career with the United States Postal Service until his retirement.
Larry was a lively character who loved his family, great conversation, sports, fishing, hunting, and his annual boys' trip to the Indy time trials. He played basketball and softball well into his adult years. Larry was a regular at the SIU Salukis basketball games and was known for his daily morning walks around Murphysboro Lake.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Luella Hornick; and his wife of 66 years, Dona.
He is survived by sons, Jeff Hornick and Brett Hornick; three grandsons; three great grandsons; and his brother, Gerald Hornick of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
The family will hold a private celebration of his life at a later date.
The family requests memorial donations to your favorite favorite charity in Larry's name.

We met Larry a few years ago when we would walk by his house every morning to my wife's work, we became close friends in our conversations and from time to time we would meet at the American Legion for a pop and chat.
Larry will be greatly missed, may GOD bless him.
