Emmett Fields Obituary
Burke was born July 19, 1943, to Emmett Guy Fields, a Commonwealth's Attorney, and Lucy Mae Burke Fields, who raised him in the town of Whitesburg, Kentucky. Burke attended U.S.C and graduated in 1967. He was a devoted fan of Gamecock sports, especially football, which he played with his brothers of Phi Kappa Sigma.
Burke enjoyed jazz and blues and was a skilled sketch artist and painter of oils. An avid outdoorsman, he worked with the S.C. Wildlife Department. He loved to hunt, fish, and spend time at the beach. While a Christian, Burke preferred to pray outdoors and shared his love of God's Cathedral with his children. In homage to Burke's years as a police officer, the writer Mickey Spillane named a character in one of his "Mike Hammer" novels after him. At 45 Burke retrained as an R.N., and worked full-time until a stroke forced his retirement.
Burke is survived by his four children: Travis, Michael (Shannon), Matthew, Meredith, and two grandchildren: Elyse and Jacob Fields.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2011, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Please sign the online guestbook at www.dunbarfunerals.com.

Your father and mother were best friends of mine and we worked together in Whitesburg. I remember you as a young boy and they loved you very much. I pray that a grand reunion was had as they were waiting for you with open arms.

He was one of my mother's nurses at Baptist Medical Center several years ago and I remembered him our time at USC.I am so sorry for your loss.
