George Harmon Obituary

Dr. George Edwin Harmon LEXINGTON Dr. Harmon, or Ed as he was affectionately known, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at the age of 64. He was a son of the late George and Annie Ruth Harmon. Ed was educated in the public schools of Lexington District One before enrolling at USC. After graduating from USC, he headed to Louisville, Kentucky, with his new wife to attend Southern Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned a master's degree, followed by his doctorate, in Old Testament Studies. Ed was an ordained minister who served churches in Kentucky and South Carolina. He always said that he was called to serve and to teach, and this was evident during his 16 years on the Lexington One School Board. He was also very involved in his home church at Lexington Baptist where he taught a men's Sunday school class for many years. He was a former deacon and trombone player in the church orchestra. He had been employed with the Department of Public Safety for over 16 years. He is survived by his wife, Deb, of 42 years, and a son, Adam, who were the light of his life. Ed is also survived by brothers, Will (Lisa), David (Teresa); sister, Claire; father-in-law, Hamp Gaylord; brother-in-law, Chris (Alice); sister-in-law, Terry (Freddy), as well as many nephews, nieces and friends who already miss his quick wit, his warmth and his brilliant mind. Services will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at Lexington Baptist Church with visitation starting at 12:30 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow in Lexington Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Lexington Baptist Church. www.caughmanharmanfuneralhome.net

I am so very sorry to hear of Edwin's passing. I learned yesterday, and it was too late to attend the service. I remember many happy times playing in his backyard as a child, and attending high school together. I send my heartfelt condolences to his wife Deb, his son Adam, and the entire Harmon family.

I regret not being able to attend the service. Thought the world of Ed-no matter where I saw him, whatever meeting we might of attended he was always very kind to speak to me and give a hug, ask how I was doing. Yes, he will be missed, but Heaven received another jewel. Praying for his wife and son in their loss-God's Grace to both of you.

February 10, 2017

Dear Deb and Adam, Sandra and I were saddened to hear that you have been parted for a time from Ed. As we think back on our days at Deer Park, the period when you and Ed were there were the happiest. Ed was tremendous as a Minister to Youth, and we so admired his tremendous range of talents. Nobody who saw it will ever forget his fabulous singing and acting in Godspell. It wouldn't surprise us if Ed were on the steps of heaven right now, showing them how the part of Jesus should be played! Please know that we are praying for you in these difficult days. Prayers for the family. No need to worry bout Edwin...he's home.
Lots of memories. My brothers and I used to ride bikes out to his home when we were kids. My daddy and his daddy were in school together. And so were Edwin and I, all the way.
As I understand it, Edwin touched a lot of lives during his service to the Lord.
A quiet-spoken man with a ''loud'' voice and the right message.

Still in shock about losing my long time best friend since the 2nd grade. Although we had drifted apart in recent years, the memories are flooding in of all the good times and conversations we had. From "shooting pool" in the basement in "all-niters" to listening to entire LP albums over the phone. Too many experiences to relate. God bless you, Debra and Adam. And to Claire, David, Will and all your families.

February 9, 2017

Ed had a kind heart and a brilliant mind. He spoke of his wife and son often and loved them dearly. I will miss his smile, his creativity, that dry wit and our conversations on how to make the world a better place. He was a wonderful colleague and in my heart Ed was like a brother. My thoughts and prayers are with his family in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.

February 9, 2017

Dear Deb and Adam, after getting over my shock at the new of Ed's death, I tried to think of something wonderful you might not know. Here's two: While working with him at Babcock I sometimes needed to call him at home. Usually Adam would answer the phone and say that Ed was busy and could not come to the phone. Code for they were playing a game. You see his family was more important than anything else except an emergency. The after several years of listening to my "poor me pity parties", he said, "Laura I can't fix what you won't let break." It took me year to realize the full scope and importance of that advise. I haven't seen him since the Carolina game when Adam was playing in the band, but will miss knowing he is gone from us so much. You know God will "fix" your pain and I pray His many blessings on all of you.
Sincerely, Laura Sprague

I had the privilege to have known and worked with Ed at Babcock Center. Ed and I started work at Babcock Center the same week. I have many wonderful memories of Ed. I spent many working hours with Ed, Will, Phil and Ralph getting projects completed. Ed was my supervisor, a mentor and my friend. Ed touched my life and many of the lives at Babcock Center. He is still fondly remembered by many of the people supported at Babcock Center, parents and staff who knew him and respected him. He worked tireless to advocate for people with lifelong disabilities. My heartfelt condolences and prayers go to Deb, Adam and the rest of his family. He will be missed but never forgotten.

Ed was my supervisor at my first job out of college - at Babcock Center. I couldn't have asked for a more caring and supportive person to launch my career in human services. He taught me how to serve and love others with joy and a smile. I'll never forget how he laughed often while we worked in some challenging situations and how he truly truly cared for and enjoyed others. Will, I'll never forget all the fun we had with the yard crew and our bagged lunches! I know you and all of your family are heartbroken, and I am so very sorry for you. But I also know your faith (and Ed's faith) is strong, and if we really believe what we say we do, we know Ed is more alive now than ever and you will see him again. Praise God that His promises are true and that He's faithful to keep them all. I'm praying for peace and comfort for your family and giving thanks for Ed's life here and the wonderful impact he had on so many of us.
Much love,
Lynn

To Dr. Ed's family, friends, and DPS team, I'm just heartbroken from hearing that Ed is gone. I've had the honor of working alongside Ed on underage drinking and impaired driving issues for probably 10 years. I was constantly struck by his composed but evident passion for keeping people safe. I gave every comment he made great weight because of my respect for him. And I know his other work at DPS, his community, his church, and his school board were also likely substantial. Simply, he was a good, good man, which is understated, but I mean it with regard far beyond what those words convey. I also appreciate his advocacy for the work of MADD, his guidance as a grantor, and his regular attendance of our candlelight vigil for victims. I will miss him, and my heart goes out to all his family and those who are hurting right now.

I am lost for words. Ed was a good boss and friend. I wish I was in SC so that I can attend the services. I will continue to pray for the family. I will truly miss a good friend. I remember in the later years after Babcock I would see Ed and Debra at Walmart and Ed and Debra would always stop and have a conversation and we never pay attention to the time or how long we talked. Ed you will be missed but God knows best. He has work for you to do.
