George Vickery Obituary

WEST COLUMBIA - George Fox Vickery, 79, of West Columbia, SC, died March 16, 2010, in a local nursing home where he had been since 2006 with Alzheimer's.
 
Born Nov. 1930, in Greenville, SC, he was a son of the late James Folger Vickery and Leila May Fox Vickery. He was the youngest of six children. Mr. Vickery was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Union, SC, where he served as deacon and a treasurer, a Scout Master for Boy Scouts of America and served in the U.S. Navy from which he was honorably discharged after 12 years of service. He retired with 30 years of service at Liberty Life.
 
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Mary Elizabeth Jester Vickery of West Columbia, SC, daughter, Mary Cathleen Vickery Bradshaw (James Howard Bradshaw) of Lexington, SC, and son, George Daniel Vickery (Juanita Barnett Vickery) of Charlotte, NC; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Davis and her daughter, Wilma Davis Orr, both of Greenville, SC.
 
Visitation will be March 19, 2010, from 6-8 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home in Lexington, SC. A graveside service will be March 20, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in Eastview Cemetery in Honea Path, SC.
 
The family would like to thank the staff at Lexington Extended Care and Tri-County Hospice for their compassionate care and all the many well-wishers and visitors.

I would just like to tell you that Mr. Vickery was such a nice man. I use to deliver the mail to him at the business on Sunset Blvd. in Lexington. He would always come out and talk when I drove up. I read the article in the paper and remembered him.
