Johnny and I worked together for many years at Richland Northeast High School. He was my mentor and my friend. At Christmas, Johnny would ask me to go shopping with him and we had a great time. Columbia Mall was still active at that time and we would shop until we found just the perfect gifts. He loved Mary Lou and those kids so much and wanted them all to have something special. We laughed often in the office together and I always considered it a treat to have a planning period with Johnny. He was truly a Southern gentleman. One of my most vivid memories of Johnny is of the day he had a heart attack. He was devoted to his students and didn't want to leave school. I was a pest and insisted that he go to the doctor and I don't regret that. I am so thankful he had many more years with his family.

Johnny was my oldest friend. I've known him for 75 years since we were young boys. We grew up together through school, high school and College. Life has taken me away from Columbia but never from our friendship.

My love and sympathy to his friends and family.

I am so sorry to hear of Johnny's passing. He was a good friend for many years. I enjoyed teaching with him and sharing a planning period - this is when he told me tales of his life and adventures. I missed him so much when he retired. In the years since, I gradually lost touch with him, but he was never far away from my thoughts. I have tremendous respect for his passion for community service and his love of history. My sympathy to Mary Lou and the family. I am so sad for your loss.
