William Albert "Bill" Schilletter Jr.

COLUMBIA - Lt. Col. William “Bill” Albert Schilletter, Jr. passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2008. He was born in Tryon, N.C. April 27, 1934, to the late Col. W.A. Schilletter and Ellen Hope Schilletter. He was a graduate of Clemson University School of Architecture and served in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot for 28 years. He served in Spain with the S.C. Air National Guard in 1961-62. His active duty time of 28 years’ commissioned service involved one short overseas tour and two long tours w/ 2 OLC. Other awards included the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, A.F. Commendation Medal w/ 1 OLC, A.F. O.S. Unit Award w/ 2 OLC and Vietnam Service Medal w/ 3 OLC.

Lt. Col. Schilletter was a member of Golden Kiwanis with whom he enjoyed camaraderie.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Kelly Schilletter; his son, Doug Schilletter and his wife, Teri of Atlanta; two grandsons, Drew and Jimmy; his sister, Hope Derby of Goldsboro, N.C.; and a number of nephews and nieces.

A graveside service with military honors will be held Thursday, August 28, at 2 p.m. in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of SCANG. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
