JoAnn Barbour Obituary

JoAnn Stampe Barbour
JoAnn found her purpose in life through her family and her faith. A long and steadfast member of United Methodist Women, she served in many positions, culminating as President of the North Carolina Conference UMW after serving as President of Burlington District UMW.
A native daughter of Shipman, IL, she found her way to Lexington, KY where she met the man who would become her husband of almost 53 years. Together they raised two sons, of whom she was justifiably proud. A late blooming graduate of Elon College where she majored in Religious Studies and History. Combining these fields informed her understanding of the impact Christianity has had on the Native Peoples of this land. Her studies and her deep, abiding faith fueled her work through UMW to care for the least among us, particularly women and their children.
She is survived by her husband, Jim; two sons, Caelan (Emeryville, CA) and Josiah (London, UK); their life partners Fox and Amanda; and one precious granddaughter; her brother, Lee Stampe (Amarillo, TX); and several nieces and nephews including her pseudo sister/daughter, Jeanie Barnett-Wittman (Brighton, IL).
A Celebration of Life will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at Front Street United Methodist Church, 345 West Front Street, Burlington, NC 27215. A reception will follow the service.

What an honor it was to meet and care for Joann. Her love and pride of her family was so strong in all the words she spoke; I loved getting updates of you all. I hope all the good memories help you through the hard times. I am sorry for the way I met her--but beyond grateful; she truly taught me a lot of life perspective in a little time.
