Anthony Rock Obituary

Anthony J. Rock, 101, a resident of Lackawanna Health and Rehab Center, Blakely, died Saturday at AseraCare Hospice of Mid-Valley Hospital, Peckville. His wife, the former Helen Grabowski, died in 1980.

Born in Carbondale in 1909, he was the son of the late Vincenzo and Virgilia Donato Rocca. Recognized as one of the hardest hitters to ever grace the welterweight division, Tony boxed in prominent arenas, such as Madison Square Garden, including six fights in Australia, where he was Navy Fleet champion. He also boxed in Town Hall in Scranton, and his biggest opponent was "Wildcat" O'Connor. They had many split decisions. Tony was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. He retired from the Scranton Transit Authority. The family would like to thank Dr. Freda and the nurses and staff at Lackawanna Health and Rehab and AseraCare of Mid-Valley Hospital. He was a life member of Mayfield VFW.
