David Elmer Obituary

David K. Elmer, 57, of Mount Cobb, formerly of Dunmore, died New Year's Day at Regional Hospital of Scranton. His wife of 37 years is the former Deborah Schwenk.

Born in Bethesda, Md., he was the son of Alvin and Matilda Smith Elmer of Florida. He was of the Methodist faith and a veteran of the Marine Corps. A civil engineering graduate of Bucknell University, he was a bridge engineer with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for 29 years.

"Elmer" always enjoyed fishing trips with his family and playing golf. His kindness and thoughtfulness inspired him to be an organ donor, who has given the gift of life so that others may live. He will be deeply missed, but always fondly remembered by his family and friends.

He is also survived by a daughter, Joan Hannigan and husband, James, Ohio; a son, David Elmer Jr., Lafayette Hill; a sister, Teresa Jasny and husband, Tom, Texas; and two grandchildren, Brianna and Caeden Hannigan.

The funeral will be Saturday at noon with services in the Neil Regan Funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave., Scranton, by the Rev. Arthur Davis, pastor at Asbury United Methodist Church, Scranton.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Dave was a forthright bridge engineer and made working by his side easy. Each time we (HNTB) had a conversation Dave, he gave us the information we needed. He was a caring professional that knew how to disseminate information in a timely fashion. His friends and family should be proud of the efforts he spent improving transportation for the Commonwealth.

To all of Dave's family...May the peace of God be with you at this time.

Dave was a fellow employee at PADOT for over 20 years. Bridge design was the passion of his professional life. He was a brilliant engineer. Any time that I ever worked with Dave I had the security of knowing that when I went to him for an answer on a problem there would be no feeling of uncertainty in my mind about it being correct. He was not afraid to make a decision, and when he did, "you could bank on it". He not only knew how to design new structures , but had the skill and knowledge to retrofit and rehabilitate.

More than tthe rememberance of his unquestionable professional expertise, Dave was my friend. We had a true bond. That friendship is the most important and best of the memories that I will always cherish.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Debby, Joanie & David.
I had the pleasure of working as "Mr. Elmer's" sidekick in the Bridge Unit for 4 years. We had many great times together both in and out of work. He always looked out for those of us that are "vertically challenged". May he Rest in Peace!
