James McCarthy Obituary

James Joseph McCarthy, 88, of Carbondale, passed away on Dec. 26 surrounded by his family.

Born and raised in Carbondale, he was the only son of Joseph P. McCarthy and Susan Loftus. He was predeceased by his loving and dedicated wife, the former Mary Barrett of the Minooka section of Scranton, who died Dec. 24, 2014. They celebrated 63 years of marriage.

A 1944 graduate of St. Rose High School, Jim was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church and the AOH of Carbondale. He attended the University of Scranton and was a graduate of Lackawanna Business College, with an associate degree in accounting. He served in the Navy during WWII as a hospital corpsman in Annapolis, Md. Before retirement, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. A man of great faith and proud Irish heritage, Jim's greatest joys in life were family gatherings, cutting grass and spending time at "the lake."

Surviving are his daughters, Suzanne Alden (Richard) of Holland; Katie Filipovits and husband, Tom of Coopersburg; daughter-in-law, Cheryl McCarthy of Carbondale; grandchildren, Erin Dalton (Brian), Lauren Alden, Dan Alden, Megan Rubano (Jack) and Amy Opalka (Cody); stepgrandchildren, Jim Filipovits, Juilie Niebell and Lauren Aiello; great-grandchildren, Lilian, Evelyn, Jack, Will, Drew, Sara, Cailie, Emma, Blake, John Luca, Domenico and Antonio.

He was predeceased in death by a son, Joseph T. McCarthy; and son-in-law, Richard D. Alden.

The funeral will be Wednesday with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church St., Carbondale. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill. Friends may call Wednesday at the church, from 10 until Mass time.

Suzanne and family, our condolences on the loss of your dad. He and my dada were part of a Carbondale to Wilkes Barre carpool as I recall. I also knew some of the folks he worked with at the USPS Data Center in Wilkes Barre. They spoke highly of him.
