Leo McCormack Obituary

Attorney Leo M. McCormack, a resident of the East Mountain section of Scranton, passed away at the age of 96 after battling Alzheimer's dementia. His spouse, the former Jeanne Bradican, preceded him in death on Sept. 7, 1982.

He was also preceded in death by an infant son, John McCormack; brothers, Thomas and Robert McCormack (and their respective spouses, Helen and Dorothy); and his parents, Thomas G. and Alice Tighe McCormack; as well as his fiancée and beloved longtime companion, Valda J. Raker.

Born in Scranton, Leo was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, after which he served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, stationed on Guam in the South Pacific. After his naval service, he graduated from the University of Scranton, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. He then attended law school at Georgetown University, received his Bachelor of Laws degree, and served as law clerk to Judge Thomas D. Quinn in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. He thereafter became a trial attorney in the tax division of the U.S. Department of Justice, litigating tax cases for the government. He was a member of both the Pennsylvania and District of Columbia court system and, in 1960, on the motion of then Solicitor General J. Lee Rankin, he was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. He also practiced in the U.S. Tax Court and Court of Claims.

Upon returning to Scranton to enter private practice, he became a partner with Nogi, O'Malley and Harris, later becoming a principal in the reorganization of the law firm of Kennedy, O'Brien, McCormack and Mulcahey. He retired from the practice of law in 2020.

Attorney McCormack served on many community boards, including Third National Bank and Trust (now Wells Fargo Bank), Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce, Lackawanna Bar Association and the board of trustees at Marywood University. He served as solicitor for the Scranton Housing Authority as appointed by the late Mayor Eugene F. Hickey. He was an active golfer and longtime member of the Country Club of Scranton, where he was a member of the board of directors. He was a devoted "subway alumnus" of Notre Dame University, loved the music of the musical group Chicago, and enjoyed being a "snowbird" for several years, traveling to Singer Island with his fiancée, Val.

Surviving are his daughter, Patricia A. McCormack, M.D.; along with several nieces and nephews, including William Egan Sr., with whom he was especially close.

Sincere thanks to the caring and devoted staff of the Evergreen Unit at yhe Pines Senior Living, as well as the nursing personnel from Allied Services Hospice, for their kindness and support both to Leo and to his family.

The funeral will be Monday from the Albert P. O'Donnell Funeral Home, 2025 Green Ridge St., Dunmore, with Mass at 10 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lord Church (Parish of St. John Neumann), 633 Orchard St., and interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.
